Lets get back to the basics....

The cost of hosting the "extravaganza" that is Eurovision is about £30 million, although the highest cost attributed was Azerbaijan who allegedly spent £500 million

In 2012 both Poland and Portugal declined to enter on the grounds that they could not afford to win, and ter have been accusations over the past 6 or 7 years that some countries are entering, but deliberately putting forward songs they think cannot win.

Personally I think that the magnificent win by LORDI was an attempt that backfired!

Everybody in the class points at The Republic of Ireland.

There's a lot of truth in that Father Ted episode.

Beyond the joke quotient what is the point?
There actually are countries who 'collectively' see the music as good, and as the pinnacle of pop, rather than our (far superior, obviously) tendency to take it all ironically, knowing that we have a huge pool of actual talent in the worlds of pop and rock  I don't know anyone either who takes TV talent shows in any way seriously, apart from rather thick people.
