Dad started his working life as a Fitter and Turner. He had some great 'engineering' terms.

While fitting parts together he'd come up with..... 'A gnat's cockhair off that'. or if it needed more taking off..... 'A midgie's dick off that'.

Tighter than a ducks arse, and that's water tight.

“Carry on (rank)” was an expression used by an officer after he had interrupted a NCO or junior officer, who couldn’t continue until he had the senior’ s permission. Hence the title of the first of the film series Carry on Sergeant.

at the risk of going off topic I understand that films get it wrong when people are told "dismissed", which I gather means you're done for the day, which would likely not be the order after getting a bollocking. "carry on" would be far more usual for the reasons you've said
