External h/d problem

Can anyone help me, I've got an external harddrive i use on my other pc often use it to back up music/uni work etc

other day hooked it up to transfer some music and it says it drive cannot be accessed any ideas? i only used it last week with no problems

any suggestions?

Any dodgy noises?
It could be so many things, have you tried it in a different USB port (presuming it's a USB connection)
Have you tried it in a different PC?
 
Does your pc give any indication that it has seen the device ? As in the "safely remove hardware" icon appearing on the task bar.
If it does then right click Computer and select manage then go into disk management and look for the drive listed there. If it is and lacks a drive letter then allocate a drive letter from there.
Otherwise assuming you have tried a number of the usb ports then assume it's dead.

The other test is to put your ear to the device when it is plugged in. If you hear a clicking noise then it's fubar. If you hear a spinning noise then there is a problem else where
