Or if applicable, “new films based on the same novel as the previous one.”

Did a search and this doesn’t appear to have been done for a while. Inspired by a true story post.

What have you watched that you preferred to the original? Feel free to reminisce about movies which were so much worse, as that will probably make this thread longer.

My example was True Grit. Partly this was because I simply don’t like John Wayne, but mostly it was because the Coen brothers know how to make movies that I like to watch. Their Mattie in particular had me spellbound:
Emphatically not a remake of the 1969 film, the Coens’ version is much closer in tone and emphasis to the source material than that first adaptation. It restores Mattie to centre stage (Wayne’s Rooster dominated the earlier movie, while the Mattie role went to 21-year-old Kim Darby), as it reveals the grim realities of seeking justice in the farthest reaches of the American West.

I agree with True Grit, the remake is better but I enjoyed both movies.

one of my all time fave films is Flight of the Phoenix, what a great cast the original had, the remake was a bit ‘meh’.

Departed - remake of a remake if you watched Hard Boiled

The secret life of Walter Mitty. More nuanced and less slapstick than I remember the Danny Kaye original being - more of a proper film, as against just a Danny Kaye vehicle. All the more commendable, given that it was "directed, co-produced by and starring Ben Stiller".

Soderberghs take on Solaris with Clooney is pretty good. Not exactly a remake of the Tarkovsky film (which was a remake of the Soviet TV version), but based on the same novel.

The writer of the novel hated them all!

I liked the Coen Brothers version only it went a bit wrong in the third quarter. The book is very good too.

Carpenter's The Thing with Kurt Russell was better than the 1950's B movie.
Same with Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
Casino Royale.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer was a cute but forgettable film remade into genre busting tv series, but that is really for a different thread

The Omega Man, a remake of the 1964 fillum the Last Man On Earth. Heston brings an intensity verging on insanity to the role that Will Smith completely fails to capture in I Am Legend.
