The Hills Have Eyes etc. may all be very good films. But I can't watch modern horror films. I can never get past the first 15 minutes. So I'll never know.

its very hard for me to think of two favourite films. The ones the spring to mind are.

Life Of Brian
The Reader
Good Will Hunting
A Beautiful Mind
Schindlers List
Das Boot
Downfall

The film that had the most profound effect on me was probably Earthlings.

The Adventures of Barry McKenzie Is the funniest film I have ever seen
Goodbye Mr Chips The original with Robert Donat. Totally un-missable, and totally the opposite of my other choice

+1.

Most staggering of all, she was 19, and in her first film!

Wiki:

"Lauren Bacall was then a 19 year old model. She appeared on the cover of Harper's Bazaar, and was noticed by Hawks' wife, Nancy "Slim" Keith, who showed the cover photo to her husband. Hawks sought Bacall out and signed her for the role, her first movie appearance."

Rush is also a VERY good film. You don't need an interest in Formula 1 to enjoy it.
Just watched it. Wow! And I speak as one who's never given a monkey's about F1. What a stunning story! As my mum used to say, 'if you wrote it as fiction, everyone would say it just wasn't believable.'
