Generally speaking, I veer towards the unsubtle.
On a scale of one to whisky, Laphroaig is WHISKY

Just love the peaty ones. Talisker, Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Bowmore and Caol Isla all score very highly. Black Bottle for a blend. Happy to drink Highland or Speyside, the Lowlands I've tried leave me cold - teeth on edge job rather like a Tio Pepe sherry.

Of the blends Cutty Sark or the Baillie Nicol Jarvie stick in my mind but any whisky has a v. short life expectancy in this house.

I very nearly was when I visited a distillery decades ago. I turned up with a couple of friends, and shared a tour of the premises with some extremely earnest American tourists. We were ushered into a room to be given an AV presentation
, via a slide show and soundtrack , of the whole whisky myth. The usual nonsense....babbling burns..designer peat...120 year old coopers who walk twenty miles to work even in the harshest winters...I think you may get the picture.

It got worse. The presentation then launched into a cod-philosophical and faintly surreal phase that lasted a considerable time. At the point when the voice-over told how "whisky aids clarity of thought", I started giggling. The Americans came close to lynching me.

i have just finished a Chivas Regal , although I do like a Highland Park, Glen Fiddich and Glenmorangie. All different but all good.

For me virtually any single malt is streets ahead even the best blend - but they come at a price. Expensive as hell is the truth of the matter. I find myself veering between the Speyside malts and the Islay malts depending on which I am tasting at the time. Some people swear by one or the other but my experience is that the best of both are as good as the other. My favourite of all time was an Islay though - a bruichladdich which was completely exquisite. I'd swear that those people who say they don't' like whisky would have been converted by this one. Sadly, I can't remember the actual name of it - it was a limited edition which has now long gone.

My favourite is Blair Atholl. Beautifully smooth and well rounded.

Slightly OT, Morrisons are currently selling Glenmorangie at £14.99. The speed it was leaving the shelves, it won't be ther long.

Ah a topic close to my heart.... Ledaig at the moment but I like most Scots Dalwhinnie, being another fav but I saw the ad about Morrisons so I shall have a look and see if I can get a bottle, Irish I adore Powers which I can't get over here at the moment... Jamesons is ok at a pinch As for blended Aldi's own does me for hot toddies is very like Famous grouse without the price tag

The Macallan 18 is a bit special, or for a more budget friendly tipple you cant beat the Famous Grouse. If you find yourself in the colonies, a glass or two of Makers Mark will do the trick quite nicely.

I rarely drink whisky now but The Famous Grouse was one that I did enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is there as much tosh written about whisky as there is about wine, then? It's a flipping drink, broadly similar, some taste a bit nicer than others, depending on your own taste buds. There. That's all you need to know,

Just what I was going to post. Laphroaig quarter cask is probably my favourite, but Highland Park is also up there with the best. Edradour is also pretty good, and a couple of years ago I brought a bottle of 8 year old Bruichladdich back from Bahrain with me, which was delicious. And a cask strength Glenmorangie ... hell, we're going to be here a while if I list all the ones I like. Can't afford it these days though.
