Never put your safety in the hands of people you don't/can't trust. You can only control your behaviour, not that of others.

This.

Anyway, as far as I'm aware, there is no recognised hand signal which involves stuffing your hand in your back pocket. So in future, the next time the rider in front stuffs his hand in his back pocket, then it is merely an indication that the rider in front is stuffing his hand in his back pocket - nothing more. Once you learn to recognise and accept that, then I reckon you should be ok.

Next week - "My club mate picked his nose and I mistook it for a sign we were being ambushed"

Double edged sword right there.

Just to lighten up the tone of this thread ....
once, on a Belles ride, I made my newly learned slowing signal: someone promptly run into by back wheel .... " Wot? I thought you were just waving your hand about" ....
Another time, on the commute, me on my usual tractor like hybrid, jeans, big stuffed panniers, him, a slick lycraed up roadie, passing me "Good morning" ... then he proceeds to put his arm behind his back and gives me the V sign!!!
Oh my, what did I do for him to tell me to FO????
Years later, I discover that was the sign for " look out for an obstruction ahead"
I mean ...

Here for rides.
I wonder if riding in a close group requires good interpersonal skills?
Some put a premium on personal hygiene I'm told.

And I was right to question your assertion. The OP's experience in this case does not prove you right...
