I think that kind of defeats the object.

On the contrary, it was exactly the point of this thread! What I think of the film is irrelevant. What was important was that it had been generally well received but did nothing for the viewer. The latter point being the most important one.

Not that the viewer hated the film but they just didn't see what the fuss was about.

I think that's only around the umpteenth time I've said that ;)

We saw one about a year or two about the destruction of the earth by a comet (or another planet?). was meant to be critcally aclaimed or something along those lines. I remember getting ot the end of it (simply because we had nothing else to do) and commenting "well at least there won't be a sequel" as the earth disintergrated and everyone was killed.
Can't think what it was called, OK - found it "Melancholia" It's list of awards including best pictures of 2011 go on and on...
I wouldn't have given Melancholia 'best of 2011', certainly, and it did drag here and there - but it had some absolutely stunning images, especially the final scenes. Typical Lars von Trier, come to that, although Breaking the Waves and Dogville were both better.

i remember taking about 8 friends to see The Adventures of Baron Münchhausen in about 1990... every single one of them hated it with a passion, except me.
Yeah, that's a terrible film. Have to admit I find all Gilliam's stuff over-blown, self-indulgent and lacking in any real substance. I preferred him when he was making those tight little deranged cartoons on the original MPFC. Was it Graham Chapman who once said of him that Gilliam 'has delusions of competence'?

i think it's a wonderful film... apart from Robin Williams' role... but most films that feature Robin Williams would be vastly improved if he wasn't in them. Apart from Good Will Hunting of course... that pile of douche needs all of Matt Damon's input removing too.

I was forced to sit through The Life of Brian the other night, having last seen it years ago. It got steadily less funny. Somehow the iconic bits are still funny, but alas, "meh" was the reaction. The absolutely best factor, which I had totally forgotten, was Terry Gilliam's acting. Mad and extreme and very very funny.

"We've got lumps of it out the back" is now my default statement to any inquiry.

It's true - the camera loves Gilliam. It's scared shitless of him, but it loves him nevertheless.
Has anyone seen the German film Münchhausen?

It's interesting because it was one of the first German colour films, and it was done when the Nazis were in power (although it's not a political film).

I've only seen bits of it, but apparently the full length version is still available.
No pushing at the back there...

I've got another one! Cinema Paradiso. Everyone raves but it just seems sentimental and self-indulgent to me.

In the Bedroom. Truly awful final realisation negates all the sympathy and made me feel cheated.

21 grams similar. Maybe I'm just idealistic.

Only Minnie Driver made GWH bearable for me. Worrabout Insomnia? A cracking film with Pacino, Swank and Williams all on great form - and Williams is genuinely scary.
