I'm not "blaming" the victim...
...you don't want intimate photographs of you being distributed beyond your control, so storing them on devices that can be broken into fairly easily seems to be daft.

Ok, maybe not 'blaming', but holding them partly responsible and calling them 'a bit daft' is a close second.

Fair enough! It's still happened, and they can't go back in time and change the outcome which is what I care about.

Who was attempting to blackmail who in that instance?
according to the original post;

It's a self-portrait by Stanley Spencer, gazing at his then wife Patricia Preece, full of disillusion and sadness, She tried to blackmail him a little bit with it and other images because of the social mores of the times

From the post it would appear a clear case of someone blackmailing their partner over a naked image

The obscure bit is how it is "a little bit"

To me it is simple blackmail is blackmail, and blackmailing your partner over a naked image is surely a form of revenge porn

Hold on just a moment Mr Bellend.

High personal standard then?

If you're going to quote me, don't do the selective editing thing, it's very dishonest.

... Or rather a concise reply to the previous post?

The question was who was blackmailing who and the relevant part was posted as a reply

Any other interpretation is entirely up to you.. Totally wrong, but you are entitled to believe what you want

If you'd goggled this, as I suggested you might like to, you would know that Preece FAILED when she tried rather half-heartedly to threaten that SHE would make the painting (for which she had posed quite happily) public when their relationship went sour. IT DIDN'T WORK because Spencer was someone who didn't give a sh1t about social acceptability.

Which is really a cause for some concern

There seems to be a difference of opinion here where I find blackmail of any form distasteful and unacceptable where you seem to find a " little bit" of blackmail acceptable

Even more worrying is the suggestion that blackmail is acceptable if it doesn't work!!!!!!

Blackmail should be unacceptable

This is the equivalent of putting my girlfriend's picture on a revenge porn site, but because she " doesn

You go and find another hobbyhorse to ride.

Because you feel uncomfortable with your stance?

Here's what I actually wrote, just for completeness.
Sweet result

So you can avoid answering the point you have raised?

If someone models for an exhibiting artist, the concent is most probably implicit at the least. The interesting part of the story which you missed was that it was the model doing the blackmailing.

It was clear that this was a personal refletion, not intended for publication, the question whether the model had given consent for publication still remains.

A threat to publish is not the same as publishing

.. it also raises the question whether if someone allows an image to be taken, whether consent is implicit for distribution

Of course. She said, 'I'll make the picture public.' He said, 'Go ahead.'

Which brings us nicely back on track..... and nicely scuppers your claims

There was NO CONSENT for publication at the time of the painting, there was NO CONSENT for publication at the time of the blackmail threats.....

The fact that she was attempting blackmail implies that she knew that he was unwilling and had not given consent for the image to be published

Responding to the pressure of a blackmail attempt is not the same as giving consent at the time the image is taken

I am sure that all those who fell victim must have regretted ever posing for such videos. They must also be experiencing lingering doubt about ever trusting another person for quite a while. Surely society's wrath must fall on those who broke that trust and did what they did with clear malice and intent. In some of these cases the damage is permanent. That moment of trust has now turned to a moment of folly. What is needed is empathy.
