First bike - hybrid for commuting and fitness

Hi guys

Looking for some advice on a bike, been browsing various articles and this forum and now have a shortlist that isn't so short. So wouldn't mind finding a way to clarify it a bit. I have not really cycled much since I was a teenager but in these strange times I have been looking for ways to get some fresh air and exercise and have been joining my other half on a Boris bike around London the last couple of weeks. Yesterday we managed 15km! I have really been enjoying myself and want to go further and faster preferably not on a Boris. I'll cycle to work a few miles through fairly central London to work and use it for exercise and exploring on weekends. Doubt much more offroad than a park at the moment. Probably best to spec out what I'm looking for.

About me: guy, 32, 5'10", 105kg
Work scheme: Cyclescheme
Budget: £450ish retail price
Bike colour: black, grey or blue (priorities hey)
Bike type: hybrid/urban - worried about balance and confidence on thinner tyres

I'd really like to get it as soon as I can. As frustrating as it is not go try some bikes in person at the moment I would rather have access to the bike now to up my fitness than wait who knows how long to be able to go to a shop. Also would love any tips on what are seen as must have accessories. Thanks

Been asked lots recently
have a look through these very similar threads (and others from the last few weeks)

the Trek fx2 a popular option but may only be available click and collect at the mo which could be an issue. You’ll also need to confirm which retailers take the c2w voucher you have. Also, get some money added to the voucher to get essentials like tubes, pump, basic tools, tyre levers, a helmet if you want one, gloves, lights, mudguards, even pannier rack etc. Oh and good D lock, an absolute must in London (around £70 for the better ones)

be aware that most sellers seem to have a 2 week Build time currently so you won’t get it immediately (and You’ll have to do the c2w paperwork)

In a previous thread someone with similar budget to yours set out three which he liked and this came out on top:
https://www.trekbikes.com/gb/en_GB/bikes/hybrid-bikes/fitness-bikes/fx/fx-2-disc/p/27991/?avad=55097_b1a33de81
Ticks most of the boxes like hydraulic brakes for all weather stopping, points for racks and guards and kick stand mount.
You might also consider this:
https://www.decathlon.co.uk/rc500-flat-bar-disc-road-bike-sora-id_8554412.html
Mechanical discs but narrower faster tyres. Fatter tyres will give more comfort but absorb more energy, balance will be unaffected. Supplied tyres at this price point have poor puncture protection but you can replace them as the originals wear.
essential accessories? A track pump for home (easier and quicker to get to the required pressure than a hand pump) a good highly secure lock if you’re going to leave it in public. Basic tools to include a multi tool to carry, puncture repair kit, tyre levers.
Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Thanks guys. I'd been favouring the Trek and I suspect that seals it for me. Now to find if I can find a way to get it as it does seem as though Trek prefer/insist on pick up rather than delivery

Unfortunately "TREK BIKES ARE CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE FOR CLICK & COLLECT AND HOME DELIVERY" on their site

Where are you seeing that?

When I go to the trek website there is a blue banner at the top that says:

Get FREE home delivery on bikes ordered online!
With a link that takes you to this page

Ahh, thank you I missed the previous post about Evans. Currently looking at buying an FX 3 for the better half, so was slightly concerned that trek had paused sales!!
