Starting with "trainer" type shoes I've found makes life easier.

Since my shoes packed in and I upgraded to some "proper" Specialized shoes (which I love BTW) I've not had clipless moments but found clipping in to be harder, missed and slipped off the pedal a couple of times on uphill starts

Either way, I can't stand up on normal pedals in normal shoes any more - it doesn't feel secure! Daft, i know but it's surprising how you get used to things

+1

Going to SPD-SL (I started on these not pansy mtb ones ) it felt weird standing because of the 6deg float - now its perfectly fine and on flats its weird.

They're a piece of piss compared with clips and straps.

I unclip my left foot to put it down on the curb when I stop.

Most people's right leg is stronger. The right leg is on the pedal to give a good rideaway.

If you can you should alternate when possible - then you learn to unclip both rather than feeling awkward with your right and you have equal wear on the cleats (unless you want to be swapping them over).

Stopping on a kerb is a bit amateurish  and in traffic inviting people to overtake whilst you move off.
