Hi all,

Was just wondering if anyone has/ known anyone that has taken a telescopic rod on their cycle tour (or backpacking I guess).

I'm thinking what could be nicer than sitting on the bank of a river, stream or whatever, in the summer sunshine with perhaps a cheeky chilled beer on hand?

I can imagine some might think what about weight and various other things, but thats not really what I'm concerned with. Just wondering if it is something that is done outside of just my mind.

You can get a lightweight telescopic rod for dirt cheap, a float or two, bread/ corn/ luncheon meat en route, couple of hooks, some line and maybe a couple of spinners. Perhaps any fishermen here might think such skimpy equipment isn't going to be up to much, but I'd be chuffed to catch a little roach or whatever is the local tiddler just chilling out and relaxing. If you get a goodun, bop on the head and theres dinner

I haven't looked into local fishing laws abroad, but my tour will take me along the Rhine for hundreds of miles, so I'm guessing theres somewhere you could dangle your tackle in, so to speak

Sounds like a great end to days cycling to me ;)

Rich,

I hope this thread runs and runs.

I was given my first fishing rod aged seven, and I still use it. The reels have changed only five times, and I am completely and utterless useless at catching fish, but there has been much fun. Sea stuff.

Every time I go away on holiday, and see the locals fishing, I wish I could have a go myself. The last time was seeing a couple of hundred fishermen trying their luck off the Galata bridge in Istanbul a month ago.

If you can find a good rod, please let "fellow sufferers" know. Also, a recommendation for an ultra-light frying pan....

Tight lines.

Hi Ricd 11

i have fished many places whilst travelling. A telescopic rod is ideal. I like fly fishing myself so have a 6 piece 8 ft rod which easily straps onto the top tube. Alternatively if you are bothered about weight you can use a line wrapped round a piece of card plastic etc. Take a bubble float and some hooks. You can use small stones/ bits of scrap metal for weights. A piece of aluminium drinks can can be cut into a disk and used as a spinner etc etc. I really enjoy catching something with long grade technology. Tight Lines!!!!

I've got a Shakespeare Traveller Fly telescopic Fly Rod and I use it for cycle fishing. It and the reel weigh virtually nothing and can easily be stashed on the rack or under the flap of a saddle bag. It's a nice bit of kit.

Me too. I couldn't even catch mackerel off the rocks at Doolin in Co. Clare, while everyone round me was hauling them out with string and bent nails.

Hub cap. I saw Floyd on Food doing a tortilla Espanol in one for some Galician truckers and it looked just the job.

Thanks for the replies folks, glad to see others like the idea too!

I'm a beginner, and was very happy with 2 roach and a bream (maybe 1-2lb) on a local canal.

Had a butchers at the Shakespeare rods, the odyssey ones look good (very short pack size), and they are all cheap too. Never done any fly fishing myself, infact watching it on fishing programs I just don't understand whats happening when they wave the rod and pull the line! I am just about capable of loop knots, tying a spade hook by hand, spinners and wagglers, but that's about it really

Think I'm definitely going to incorporate it into my tour

Brilliant! Rather like a shallow wok.

I am a keen sea angler and I often see other fishermen with rods strapped to the frames of their bikes, and I'm talking about 14 feet Beach Casters that split into two sections. I have an 11 foot spinning rod that splits into three equal sections and is easily carried slung to the frame of my bike. The reel and lures take up very little space in a rucksack.

Just thought I'd let everyone interested know:

The Lidl local to me is selling a load of fishing gear from this Monday (29/03), including £17.99 telescopic rods, so I'll be off to check it out

It won't last long but the pound shop generally has telescopic rods and kit.
