Not sure about loosening and tightening the rear wheel by spinning the QR lever instead of the nut - is that OK?

I can't see it makes much difference, although I would tighten using the nut so the QR lever locks in the direction I want it to.

On my sus fork bike, the lever needs to be pointing downwards because it doesn't quite fully lock if it's against the fork leg.

Pretty much all covered, but before final inflation I always turn the wheel pushing the tyre away from the rim looking to see if the tube is pinched. IMO the most important thing to do is check if anything is left in the tyre ready to puncture your nice new tube.

Well it's sod law isn't it. Read this article while having breakfast, went out for a ride just afterwards and guess what, had to put the theory into practice.

Not too bad I suppose only the second puncture this year and at least it wasn't pissing down with rain like the last time.
