You'd be surprised. You've done the ride several times, so are probably more capable than you think, and know how things work, which is more than many new riders.
As regards signposting, at the start of the ride, before we've spread out too much, it's not much effort to get back to the start, and you don't have to sprint back to be ready with a few minutes, you can just gradually work you're way back chatting to people and enjoying yourself as you do.
I've only occasionally done any signposting, these days there are normally far more volunteers than Simon needs, and it doesn't have to be a series of short sprints, unless you want it to be.

I'd recommend it less at the end of the ride, since you can sometimes find yourself with a 20 minute wait as the ride trickles past, and consequently stuck at the end of the queue for breakfast.
