...presumably the return is going to be "Route 1" to The Cenotaph? Happy to go along that path as support, but not yet expert at route planning without involving one or two articulated trucks...

I'm sure there must be better ways to get to Londres in one piece fairly quickly not involving choo-choo trains. Any suggestions?

The A29 north will be quite heavy with fast traffic on a Saturday and I'd limit how long you're on it. In a few places, it's fairly narrow, and in the past I've not been overly happy cycling on it (and it takes a lot to faze me). If you start off on the above route, I'd then go onto the B2139 which is the road we'll be coming down, either from the roundabout with the A284/A29 or later on, by moving across eastwards at Pulborough (in which case take care, but have fun on the rapid descent at Bury Hill)! Then proceed northwards on the minor roads immediately east of the A24, and then carry on with the rest of the above route from Dorking.

I thought I had the answer to the Gurkha bridge/flint path dilemma, as this week the A29 at Bury Hill had one lane all cordoned off, all the way to the top, so would have been perfect for cyclists to go up in safety. Sadly, the workmen have been too efficient, and had finished working by this morning and cleared everything away.

A kind thought, but I fear that taking the ride up Bury Hill would lead, inevitably, to my evisceration by disgruntled riders.

The suspension bridge is up and suspended! It is soooooooooooo charming! We're toying with the idea of giving you a choice - ruffty-tuffty types take the flint path, genteel souls go over the bridge, meeting up just south of Arundel.

Three of us did the route today. I had reservations about a portion of it, but the person who had no prior knowledge was very impressed. The weather forecast is still looking good, and we think we will have the sun rise to our left as we leave the woods just north of Coolham - which will be wonderful. This, peeps, could be a classic.

You'll be getting an e-mail about sausages and eggs and cheese and stuff later tonight - if you get back to me tomorrow morning that would be just dandy.

Do I sound a wee bit Fotherington-Thomas about this? I do? I am.

Thank you Friday Nighter's for all your support, sponsors, and best wishes, Thank you also for all the route advice. Been a bit manic today, hence this late reply. Yes, I know I should be resting (t - 4 hours and all that) but my body is in overdrive.

The FNRttC sounds like it's going to be fantastic, l just need to ensure (like the A Team) that my plan comes together and I'm at HPC for midnight, ideally well before for a bit of a breather.

Andrij, I will ring you sometime today (Thursday) to arrange the run into town.

ok, so the sleep thing didn't work very well at all, there is just too much excitement and anticipation doing the rounds!!

Well this is the earliest I have ever set off for HPC so I guess I don't have a very good reason to be late. Don't forget all to get those buttie orders in to Simon this morning. I could probably babble rubbish for hours but I need to start cycling in less than half an hour................

the genteel types, those crossing by the suspension bridge, will go down to the high street by the leper colony, turn right, turn left and go on to the Ford roundabout. The ruffty-tuffty types will come through Burpham, turn right on to the main road, pass by the station. I suppose we could all meet up at the leper colony. (Swine flu! Pah! The FNRttC spits on swine flu!)

Ahem - see my remarks about Bury Hill above. Any Grand Old Duke of York act would see me swinging from a lamppost. I'll have been promising flat roads from Chiltington on, and I can, even now, hear the groans brought on by that little bit of uphill on the Rackham road, or those two (surprisingly fierce) little inclines out of South Stoke. When they get to the leper colony they'll be 2 metres above sea level with a bit over 8 miles to go, and in no mood to go any higher.
