Here for rides.
weather forecast on metcheck for haywards heath, the bigger less posh neighbour of Lindfield for Friday night is positively encouraging, suggesting 25% cloud no rain and a mere 9mph gusty sou'westerly.

to be fair I'm grabbing at every straw of encouragement I can find, the Beacon after 55 miles looms large in my imagination and I'm a total rouleur. Cue Adam Ant voice singing "You don't sprint, you don't climb, what do you do?"

You join me and MacBludgeon pootling up at the tail end  Well, I might be further up, I seem to be a better climber than I thought I was. The Beacon is slightly less terrifying now I've conquered Blackgang and umpteen other nasty hilly bits on the IOW.
Just remember: change down low and early. Better to take it slow and steady, and better to change up because you find it easier than you thought, than be forced to change down because you can barely move.

No.No - it's not Chinese...it's usually Greek in origin. redjedi will explain tomorrow - he's also an 'expert' in the history of the kebab. He has posted many items on the subject.

Oh, I'm disappointed Aperitif. Right sit down, pencils out, there'll be tests tomorrow night.

The kebab although popular in countries such as Greece and Cyprus is actually of Turkish origin. The word comes from the Aramaic "kabbābā" which means to burn or char.

The popular doner kebab was created by a Turkish gentleman, Mahmut Aygun, in Germany who sadly past away earlier this year.

And that concludes the first lesson, on the history of the Kebab

(what did we ever do before the internet and Wikipedia  )

....but if there is one thing on earth I detest more than the Brompton it is the work of Mr. Anish 'look I've made a giant vulva' Kapoor.(Agreed - tosser.) Actually that's not correct. I'd do serious time for blowing up the entire ouevre of Henry Moore. And don't start me on Anthony Caro.

Surely not the drawings made in the Underground? As a war artist, he's no Ken Howard but the work is evocative of the time. I don't care for the stone - except that 'mod. sculpture' like that needed to be done at some point, but the drawings? Anthony Caro was a helper of Moore's so I suppose it follows...nice rusty steel though - "nice patina guv"

hey fellow reserve easiest section TEC
Drop that reserve qualifier. My legs are rubbish right now and I have tendered my resignation from the ride as riding overnight will just not be fun. Your opportunity to step up has arrived.

Cue Tynan going from quietly confident to a little bit nervous.

That stretch is fine, it includes Turner's Hill and some pleasant stretches as dawn starts to break. It's a really pleasant section of the ride as the mood lightens with the light levels.

Always feels like one of the easiest sections to ride.

Metcheck has gone barmy - forecasting 3 degrees at 4 in the morning and 13 degrees at 7. The BBC is sticking with 9 degrees for most of the night which sounds good. The cat has taken to eating really, really cheap cat food rather than the more exotic goodies we've been giving him, but he's stopped throwing up - so we're expecting light headwinds and an overcast sky - but no rain!
