It's weird, if the ref actually did card players for crowding I suspect it would stop instantly. But then fans, pundits etc would complain about the sanitisation of the game. A no-win situation, unfortunately.

I think the refs have to make allowances for players being a bit excitable in the heat of competition. The trick is knowing where to draw the line. If they gave a yellow every time a player complained, we’d end up with five-a-side matches (actually, we wouldn’t because once a side is down to seven players, the match is forfeit, but you get my drift).

Yes you can, if you go down, play will eventually be stopped, whereas if you hobble around unable to really move you're effectively playing with ten men.

And what is fair play? If it's some ludicrous idea of effete chivalry then it has no place. What matters is winning, not taking part.

As someone who doesn't know much about football I read that article to educate myself a bit. It seems to be saying that the rules and punishments for behaviour like playacting and shouting abuse at the referee are there, but they are not being applied? Is that out of fear?

fear? Maybe. there is so much money tied up in the game, who knows what edicts are passed down to the refs. In the English league if a ref has a 'bad' game they are often dropped to a lower league game next time as a sort of punishment. This cannot be good for the game.
