You can always guarantee that the smaller teams will play better than expected and the bigger ones will be nervous and trying not to lose.

I used to go to school with Trevor Brooking's daughter and with Bob McNab's daughter. 
The latter was ok-ish because we both supported the same club side, the former was a stuck up bovine with delusions of grandeur.

Disappointing to hear that about Ms Brooking, no doubt Trev wouldn't have approved.
A mate of mine used to live next door to West Ham manager John Lyall.
I was told Lyall was the nicest bloke you could wish to meet, seemingly able to switch off from football when he got home.
Confirmed by this obit in The Guardian which describes him as an 'affable man', in sharp contrast to a lot of people involved in football.

We're bound to disagree but I thought Deli Alli was decent, Sterling was good enough apart from his first touch and his last pass.
I'd keep him because there's little enough creativity already.
Kyle Walker needs to learn when to lump it occasionally but his speed and forward thinking is admirable. Spurs should sign him
Henderson and Lingard were largely anonymous but I'm wise enough to know that they probably ran miles closing down and doing the ugly stuff.
I've always thought that Ashley Young was average but I like his new defensive capability and snidey nous. We need some street cred.
Harry Maguire is a bit of a revelation to me. I like him.
Stones, clever footballer, calm and has the good looks of Cilian Murphy.
Pickford has done good.

Maybe that was because I wasn't in the "in" crowd... Still, people used to do double takes at parent-teacher evenings
Also in my year was the daughter of an Arsenal board member. I did her a favour, doing some illustrations for a project. In return, I received an Arsenal jacket, which I still have, still treasure (and still wear) to this day, some thirty years down the line.

So, once it got to extra time I turned the sound down on the laptop and fired up a game on the main pc. I could see it was still 1-1.
Then it got to penalties. About then I reckoned it was about time to go to the pub, what with the only team we had ever beaten in a shootout already exited.
During the journey I heard various shouts due to open windows but it wasn't conclusive.
Once I was in the pub, people didn't seem overly exited and although I couldn't hear the words on the tv, the tone also didn't seem exited. The England players were hugging each other but didn't seem very happy.
I assumed normal service had been resumed.
But then, I noticed that the tv wasn't showing the Colombia players. And finally I saw Southgate smiling when he hugged someone. So a quick look on the internet confirmed that we had in fact, won.
A few thoughts:
After seeing England's tactics at corners and looking up "love train" on urban dictionary, I am now significantly more suspicious of Glen Hoddle.
How have we got so far without any recognisable attack? We've scored one goal from open play and it was from a midfielder.
I still don't know what Jordan Henderson does but Klopp keeps picking him so it's probably just me.
Given what's happened so far, it's entirely conceivable that Belgium and Brazil somehow manage to eliminate each other in some sort of freak result.

This is why English football is screwed.
The most insidious part of this world cup has been Neyemeyer and now we have English players emulating him.
But its OK if we win the world cup like that. Is that what English football has come to? It makes no difference how much you cheat as long as you come home with the trophy. It sounds like a very hollow victory to me.

Well that was my breakfast viewing - it started at 2am here and I wasn't prepared to stay up all night! There has to be at least one ugly game in any world cup so hopefully that's out of the way. I suppose we just about shaded it but I don't recall a single meaningful attempt on target. Awful play-acting at times by players on both sides.
I'm not just saying this as Spurs fan but Danny Rose really needs to be in place of Ashley Young. And saying this as a Spurs fan, well done to the penalty takers
