That's not actually correct for pedals. If screwed on loosely, they won't normally tighten themselves adequately. Precession only works when they are fairly snug.Same with thread on BBs, pedals and cassette lockrings.

I had the same problem fitting different pedals to a new bike. Need a scaffolding pole to get the original ones off.
