When I used to live in Bangor there was a well known route down some single track roads to get round the main part of the town and it's gridlocked roads
It included a ford through a small river
There was a depth gauge nailed to a pedestrian bridge next to the ford
Only locals would know about it as there were no signs or anything - probably to stop tourists trying to use it
Everyone knew that in winter it was worth avoiding unless there had been a long dry spell
occasionally I went down there after a spell of rain just to see if it was passable - our car was only an estate but had quite a high body shell and could get through in waters that were higher than most except the obvious 4WD things
even so everyone drove very slowly and stayed as far to the upstream edge of the ford as possible
several times I saw a small hatchback stuck abandoned just off the edge of the ford in the main river
they generally stayed there for a few days until a garage could be bothered to drag them out and scrap them
It was great fun in summer as it could - with some imagination be classified as on my daughter's route home on a bike
we tended to get home late if I did that with her
(late and wet!!!!)
