Food in Britain just isn't as important as it is in France. If it was more important we would spend more time sourcing ingredients and preparing the food. Part of this is due to us living in a mild, wet climate. The range of things that grow naturally in Britain is much narrower and food is more a sustenance that anything else

Having said that, the Hollands Steak Pudding and chips tonight was really good

Well let me put my two pennies worth. As you all know, I am French and very proud of French cooking and many other things too. I have lived in Britain since 1970 and must say that food has improved a lot since then over here. When I go back home to my brothers, that's when I see the difference between British home cooking and French home cooking. The French one is so superior because the ingredients are fresh and of better quality. French housewives take time and are proud of their cooking. They don't drown everything with that watery brown sauce you call gravy over here. The don't cook out of packet. Please take note that I am talking about home cooking and not restaurants. But restaurants are also better overall as each restaurant will have its own speciality, not chain ones that offer the same menus all over the country. And then, the cakes.... So, to summarize, French food is definitely better and diversified but nowadays, it is also possible to eat well in the UK, which was hard to do back in 1970.
When I go home, I can't wait to visit my brothers for proper French food with all its delights. Some of you will disagree, but deep down , you know I am right, after all, France is the most visited country in the world.

Certainly the French put much more effort into their cooking and actually enjoy food more. Meals are an occasion there. Here eating seems to be something you do while watching TV.
I do love the way that restaurants, cafes etc are still mainly family run businesses.

Not wishing to stereotype French cuisine too much but.......What are frogs legs about? They taste a bit like chicken and have loads of fiddly little bones in. Why not just eat chicken? Foie gras not all it's cracked upto be and highly controversial and snails, all you can taste is fecking garlic butter, poncetastic!
Whilst some French food is good some is shite just like most countries. I have had great meals in France and some decidedly dodgy ones.

I was hoping that you join in because of your background and your spent time in both countries. Every time I am in France and having a meal and no matter the grade of the food outlet, I can see that everything is done in a serious manner. Take gratin dauphinoise - its just baked sliced potatoes in cream but the taste is great and goes wonderfully with various meat dishes. Then you have patisserie - now thats a whole different world.

I wonder if there is something in French history when cooking took on such a religious fervour. The variety and complexity is quite full on.

Thats what I thought but when you have a meal in France, you will change your mind. I have yet to step into French restaurant in the UK. It always the usual staple - roast, curries, pies , etc. Its just so different when you are over there.

Another thing is that when you having a french meal, wine becomes a must not because everyone does it but just goes so well. I would never have wine with my meal in an informal setting in the UK. Its beer as best.
