What to do this morning ?
Bike ride I think.

It's always struck me as potentially one of the more challenging FNTttCs.
Not really. The hills come early but so does the refreshment stop. And the views from the moors are unrivalled, followed by an interesting and pretty 2nd half that's undulating but OK. It's longer than some but the views then the beers at the Destination(s) are terrific

+1. Yes, purely in terms of elevation this one is the lumpiest FNR, for the time being- the cancelled Hayling Island run would easily top it, let alone my (not official Fridays) IOW run, but the climbs are nearly all of the sit-and-spin variety with the odd short-but steep ramp, there's nothing anywhere near as nasty as the Beacon.

Third year I've done this one, and perhaps the best yet, for me at least. Absent friends were missed (sickness/LEL/AOB), leaving a compact and bijou peloton of eight. Not ideal for numbers then, but it did make for pretty rapid progress. And this year, I had exactly the right bike for the ride, on the ride, namely the Litespeed. Didn't have it ready in time for 2015 (collected the afternoon after the ride), couldn't get bike reservations there and back (for the second time) last year. But this year, I had the bike, and I had the reservations...

In view of the train times (depart Euston 2040, arrive 2248, back south from Lancaster 1038) and a dentist appointment in the morning (as usual with check-ups I spent rather more time waiting) any and all options for doing this month's century, before the ride or as part of it, were off the table, if they weren't fairly nuts (even by my standards) in most cases. So a leisurely day it was before heading off to Fratton for a train just before six. As ever, the journey between Waterloo and Euston was agonisingly slow, caught absolutely every single red light I think- 16 minutes for a mile and a half- but bags of time before boarding for the Manchester train, along with Gordon and Sonia (who had missed her booked service and stumped up full fare for this one). @Andrew Br and Yoav were already at the Mayfield, and shortly after we were joined by @Bazzer (pleasure to meet & ride with you!). @Tacey was on the 2350 arrival, and Lisa (NOTP but on the ride last year) was waiting at the Town Hall, so Andrew and Gordon waited at Piccadilly for Tacey while the rest of us joined Lisa. Barry sorted the one and only puncture (I think), his own before the ride was fully assembled. One safety talk later, we were on our way.

Early progress was pleasingly rapid, and it pretty much stayed that way for the duration. Nearly every red light seemed to go green as we rolled up, which made a much appreciated change. Lisa, despite her protestations to the contrary (and her rear derailleur playing up), had no bother with the climbing, and neither did anyone else. Which was handy, given the elevation graph for this one put the majority of the lumps in the first twenty or so miles. And waiting when we had frequently splendid views was no bother at all.

25 miles into a 65 mile ride might have been early indeed for a halfway stop, but we'd done the hard work & other options would be self-catered I imagine. Whitebirk McDonalds proved, again, a perfectly adequate place to while away the time. When we made our way onwards, Andrew failed to provide the traditional ride leader navigation error at the traditional roundabout, but we then made up for it by losing the tail of the ride at the next one. Whoops....After the last climbing of real note, at Longridge (well, in best tradition everyone else thought there was more climbing than Andrew…), it was either flat or very gently undulating. And absolutely no need of a 999 call this time, thankfully...

The off-road section along the Lune was as lovely as ever, and rather more pleasant for my nerves and posterior thanks to the Litespeed. We arrived in Morecambe before eight, having once again taken all the right roads if not necessarily in the right order. And this time, I successfully photographed Eric here.....

He definitely brought us sunshine this time! Then, back to Wetherspoons in Lancaster for many calories (unlike after York, normal service was resumed & I went for the Largest Breakfast on the Menu). After saying my farewells, round to Lancaster station where Barry and I joined the 1038 train south- as far as Warrington in his case. A bloke in a dress (not LGBT, just a bloke in a dress) complimented me on my helmet as I walked through the train to my seat. First class proved a worthwhile and restful upgrade, a decent sandwich for lunch followed by sporadic snoozing. Slightly late into Euston but no problems, another crawl through traffic notwithstanding, making the next fast(er) train south from Waterloo. Back home just before four, napping not long after that.

Thanks everyone! Back to the white rose county next year, I hope.....

Hi all. I absolutely loved my 2nd cycle on Friday night and it was all down to the great company and encouraging comments .. and the personal service to the train station  Thank you everyone. You were so kind. Some demons laid to rest. But not sure I'll ever be able to whizz down hills like Andrew ha ha.

Now that I've caught up on my sleep and rested my legs, I can say this ride is one of my favourites. As a city woman, there's something magical about riding up in the moors, with a 'proper' night sky. There wasn't enough moonlight for me to attempt to ride without lights for a millisecond or two (yes, I'm a wuss) but it was still lovely for all that. As much as I whinge about hills, either my legs have gotten stronger or the Wiggins bike had the right gears as I didn't cough up a lung or walk up any of them. Result!

The very misty section (Ribchester?) and bike lights behind me had me thinking a cyclist in black, with no lights cycled across my path. It was my shadow :rolleyes:. That was scary moment, but it was balanced by Bazzer educating me on the sounds pheasants make, mummy duck and her ducklings crossing the road to get to the stream and the changing sky from night to dawn. Lancaster Black is the appropriate drink instead of Guinness for this ride.

The only blemish on this ride were the 'sausages' in Wetherspoons. They really should be replaced with actual sausages.

Same time, next year Bruv?:okay:

Sorry but I'm out. I've just about cobbled all my kit together and was due out in the next 5 mins, but I've just been hit by another tiredness wave after my LEL exploits, and I'm not sure I'm awake enough even to get to the station, never mind ride all night. It wouldn't be fair on the rest of you if I wasn't able to cope.

Sorry @Tacey, I was supposed to be holding back to ride with you to the start. I've texted @Andrew Br and I'm sure he will sort things out.

Also, can you all please take a moment out to remember alan_s at the bus stop please. He was a good friend of mine and I really would have liked to pay my respects again but it's not possible.
Hi there, mcshroom (now there's a good idea for McDo's), not to worry. All got sorted - had a double escort with Andrew and Gordon fore and aft, flashing blue lights, all mod cons. Alan was well remembered at the bus stop. I didn't know him but I feel it's part of the ride so it seems right to stop and have a quiet moment.

As has already been said, it was a lovely evening for a ride and this, I think, was the best of the Manchester-Morecambe FNRttC. The lovely weather and the dramatic cloud formations against the (almost) full moon made for spectacular viewing on the moors.
It started, as usual, for me with the gentle ride to Piccadilly where I grabbed a table in the Mayfield bar upstairs.
yoav (not OTP) arrived pretty quickly followed by Gordon P, StuAff and wanda2010. Bazzer turned up not long after that.
Gordon P and I waited for Tacey while Bazzer lead the others to Albert Square to meet up with Lisa C (just signed up to TP :hello:).
After a quick safety talk (not really necessary with a group of this experience and competence) we were off.
As StuAff has already said, most of the many red-lights changed to green just as I unclipped but before I had to put a foot down (you're all welcome BTW) so we kept moving and made it to the top of the climb in Whitefield together.
No one needed to visit the 24 hour Sainsburys just before Bury and, in a change to previous rides, we skipped Bury town centre on the by-pass; shorter, less glass but no good natured nightlife.
After a stop to lay flowers and remember jogler/Alan S, we started the climb through Tottington. StuAff, yoav and I rode steadily and the rest of the ride caught up very quickly when we stopped to re-group. Despite carrying 2 weeks worth of touring luggage, Gordon P was just behind us, Lisa C still seemed to have her climbing legs from last year, Tacey was storming along and wanda was obviously on good form. Bazzer had declined my invitation to ride in the group while I took over TEC duty and he arrived as smiley as ever.
My further "elfin safety gorn maaaaad" talk was duly heeded and no one came off on the steep dip into 90 right over bumps and we re-grouped in Edgworth. One of the pubs looked like it was still open and so Gordon P suggested a pint....... He really is steel framed. Since there were no takers (I had raised a dellzeqq-esque eye-brow of disapproval because McDonald's Whitebirk beckoned) we started the "big" climb.
My advice that the steep bit was at the beginning was taken on board and the re-group stop was very short. I tried and failed to take a decent picture of the Winter Hill TV mast with the moon and the clouds behind it so I'm hoping that someone with a decent camera (and some clue) managed to capture it.
We flew down the Grane Road to Shadsworth (the best part of the ride IMO) and were in McDonalds soon afterwards.
Duly refreshed, we went outside to find that the temperature appeared to have dropped about 5 deg and the bikes were covered in dew.
No ride leader induced Gefechtskehrtwendung nach Steuerbord was required on this ride (for the 1st time ever) but we had managed to lose part of the group so we had to turn back to look for them.
More lovely descending followed. I love going downhill, especially when I don't need to use the brakes. It's the best feature of this ride. The following climb from Ribchester to Longridge is always a chore (I hate climbing) but we did it in very little time and, it seemed, in great style.
The route from Longridge through Inglewhite and Scorton is my favourite part of this ride. The lanes are just lovely and the views (daylight by this stage) are fabulous. Since there are no hills to speak of on this section, we rode mostly together although I did bomb off down the few descents and I almost collected mummy duck and cubs around one corner. Mummy duck clucked her annoyance as she gathered in her brood. I wonder how she felt as the rest of the group appeared ..........
The coastal path from Conder Green was in good condition and, thankfully, there was no repeat of the drama from the recce. I reckon I'd walked/jogged 2.5 miles to the station.
Morecambe came and went (great views over the Bay) and we had breakfast in the Wetherspoons followed, soon afterwards, by beer. Lancaster Black was again the beer of choice. I might look for another breakfast venue for next year's ride. Wetherspoon's sausages are awful. I don't want "artisan" but something resembling "meat" would be good.
As time passed the group headed off for their various trains leaving Gordon P, wanda and I as the last to leave.

Thank-you one and all for coming all the way to MCR for this ride and to Moodyman and mcshroom for committing to it. Hope you've both recovered and I'm sure we'll ride again in the future.
From the feedback that I've received, it seems that the East Lancs Moors are the highpoint (literal and metaphorical) of the route so I'll be sure to include them in next year's ride. This, of course, assumes that I pass the strict physical and mental aptitude tests that are required for FNRttC ride leaders. I scraped through this year ........

Great to see you on the forum @Lisa Crewe and well done again on putting the demons behind you.
Chorlton Wanderers are still running their monthly rides so there are more options for group rides to help get more confidence plus I'll let you know when we're doing other Manchester rides.
Hope you can persuade Jonathan B to come out as well. I'll keep working on him :bicycle:.
