Going back via the bird sanctuary place is a nice route Frank - and you get to see the concrete barges too - along with lovely wide-screen views of the approaching London skyline.
Last time, topcat Dave led us out - we went through the bird sanctuary as the crow flies, ate cake in their café like starlings, then ducked out the other side.

We swanned past the cafe when we went that way!

I hadn't quite appreciated how much the old and new routes differ. This shows last Septembers actual route, and the proposed new route (but please bear in mind, that Simon may choose to use a different route on the night, nothing is carved in stone):

Last Septembers route is in brown, and the new route is the more northerly one, in blue. It's very slightly longer (by less than four miles), but that's no bad thing since we almost always arrive at Southend early, or Simon has to find novel ways of slowing things down!

Isn't there a rule whereby five non-licence holders are allowed a maximum of five puns per ride?

Yes but due to a rather over-generous interpretation of that rule by the punsters it's no longer clear that we are covered, in the event of needing to beat them to death with a bicycle pump...

Simon has to find novel ways of slowing things down!
true - I'm sure my architectural disquisitions will be sorely missed!

(although the new route goes within 200 metres of a Dellzeqq masterpiece in the village of Stock. Be afraid....)

Hijack!
In tandem with myself, I would like to wish Timothy Hall, photographer, teepee aspirant, tandemista, another one of the good looking repair peloton etcc etc, an extremely lovely day celebrating his 50 not out, whilst batting for Life's XI in their current match against Livingpressure All-Stars XI.

 Tim - good health and happy days! (Someone will be along with the cake soon)
