Oh b#gger!

Don't worry Martin - his appearance will be vetted.
And, Mcshroom - don't worry, London will be a veritable Winter Wonderland inviting a scenic ride of Oxford Street etc to see the light bulbs...

You have got more than a week to become accustomed to it.

In theory yes, but there's no way I'm leaving £1500 worth of bike in the bike store at work, which is the only way I'd get to cycle it, other than at the weekend, so basically two days, some of which will be used to do other things, like attempt to tidy up some of the turmoil of a week of work!

It'll also depend on ChainReaction getting their ass in gear and sending off the order I put in, which is still sat in "Processing". The two orders afert that one have been dispatched, and indeed one has arrived. I'd rather hoped the computer would have been sent off, rather than left in limbo.

Thanks for the offer, but I'd have to carry the bag with me, to get the bike in the building, which would be a bit of a faff, to say the least!

Given that the frame is XL, it may well also be too big, and if I was cycling to work, I'd need to use the tail bag, so would have the rack on, which makes everything slightly more clumsy and bulky as well.

Even if I went through all that, there isn't that much room in our lab for a bicycle anyway, it's full of spacecraft simulators, thermal test chambers, clean room, assembly benches, and assorted electronics equipment.

as throwaway lines go, that's up with the best

It even beats my old favourite which was when someone on another forum asked for ideas for storing multiple bikes in his garage. I suggested a bike-hoist, to suspend it from the ceiling. He replied that it wouldn't work because that was where he kept the hovercraft!

Unfortunately spacecraft simulators aren't that exciting, they're boxes which electrically "look" identical to the spacecraft, so they can generate commanding to the instrument and accept data from it over the communication links, and provide power in a representative manner.

They tend to just be big boxes with PC controllers inside them.

The next generation are likely to be laptops with SpaceWire bricks and small power supplies, which should be easier to support. One of my current nightmares is keeping the twenty year old Cluster/Soho simulators still functioning. We've got six of them, and I need to swap components around between them to keep one operational.

Tim, this new bike of yours seems to be a huge inconvenience to you.

Tell you what, I'll take it off your hands. A fiver do you?

ah. Here's a thought. Who would know about putting ground anchors with screw-in bitbobs and flush plates in to the roadway at Madeira drive. And if the Brighton Council Geezerman happens to be at Madeira Drive on Saturday 20th, would said person be willing to offer technical advice?

they might, but we've got eyes on that as well......(and it's not very wide, and further from the Madeiral).

the other option is up the stairs, but if the stairs are wet, then we're in trouble.

What sort of loads? What buried services are there? What are you planning to attach to them? Presumably they need to be removable after the event?

not great - our structural engineer is on the case, but it's uplift, and the cover could be vented. And we think not, but Brighton can confirm. And no - hence the flush plate. Apparently they've been installed elsewhere - that's what gave me the thought.

The other option is those plastic barrels filled with water, but they're not as fancy.
