I'm sorry I've never been any good at subtlety, is that a "No" to Shooters Hill then?

I'll try to give the 'non-subtle' translation:-

This is a social ride for riders of all abilities and is aimed to create maximum enjoyment for the greatest number. The route is selected with this in mind and a desire for the ride leader not to face death threats, once people get their breath back. It is appreciated that this may not give everyone a full workout and that the opportunity to show off ones hill climbing ability, or indulge in macho posturing, may be diminished. You can of course bring panniers and transport cake, plus house bricks, to give yourself more of a workout.

The even less subtle version:-

If you want a tougher ride then **** off and do one

I'm not sure if I'm good at subtlety or not, I'm sure you'll let me know

Is this why you're going to be doing this on your Pompetamine, complete with marathon plusses, rack, mudguards, dynohub, bricks, MacB???

Absolutely, I'll probably double back to do some extra hills and miles as well, I won't be doing it in short sleeves I'll just be wearing a Mankini!!!

Only if the Pomp is ready and only because I know that Simon secretly loves to admire that sort of bike

to be almost serious....I used to be a bit taken aback when people sent me e-mails saying 'well, that was crap!' or 'the toilets were smelly!', but now I just think 'hey, they've got a point of view, and if they don't like something it's better that they tell me'. So I do listen - some of the time.

The worst trouble I've ever got in to is when I've said to people 'this ride might be too tough for you - I'd rather you didn't come, because we have to get there by such and such a time...' Some people, say 'fine' and some people get really totally pissed off and never forgive me. 'It's a CTC ride, it should be for all comers' comes to mind.

I'll put serious money on that being nowhere near the worst trouble you've ever got into...

Hmmm. I could get out the Galaxy, stuff some panniers full of breeze blocks and join you. Maybe we could join Martin235 in a couple of circuits of Shooters Hill! But you'll have to lose the Mankini first!

i agree with MacB that these rides should be casual and cater for wide spectrum of riders. if you like a good workout martin, why not signing for some hilly audax, sportive? i am planning to do evans "king of the downs" sportive route before it gets too cold. i haven't got a particular date in mind, but it will have to be dry. any joiners welcome for a fast(-ish) dash over north downs? sorry for off topic btw.

Just been catching up on the developments in this thread since I last checked in... only about ten pages... a few comments:

Beer - there are probably better options for beer in Whitstable than the Waterfront, tbh. If you're after a well-kept pint of fine ale, there are better pubs in town. If you insist on a sea view, there's the Whitstable Brewery Bar (about a minute away from the Waterfront along the beach), which stocks the Whitstable Brewery range and guest beers (though not usually anything from Sheps).

Hills - Bassers Hill is nothing to worry about. I've been over it on fixed and didn't have to get off and walk. It has a short steep section (ie >10%) but is mostly quite manageable unless you're on a stupidly long gear. I have no strong feelings about Shooters Hill. I don't mind it - I've been over it on fixed numerous times. It's not steep, just long. Tbh, going down the other side into Welling is more of an issue on fixed. I think I've hit >180rpm down there once or twice. But I'm not doing this ride for the hills, I'm doing it for the sociable side, so the flat route is good.
