Simon - sometimes your otherwise delightful rhetoric can be ambiguous and confusing though for the uninitiated.
'for the grizzled', 'a fast non-genteel one', or indeed, 'a genteel ride'. These have coded secret meanings and we love you for it, even though I can't decode what they really mean, but these phrases don't clealry communicate your expectations about participants abilities(and all the unambiguous bollox about racks and muguards is just that bollox, and we love you for that too!)

That wasn't a particularly nice pub when I was last in it a couple of years ago, may have changed of course. The Duke of Cumberland wasn't too bad just into the town.

I fear my taste in pubs differs from Suggs' though I have supped in the Old Neptune just because of its location.

Ignoring the time delay there is no flaw, much as I'd 'love' to waltz around looking for the right ambience combined with the trendiest beers, the thought just gives me flashes of that Hipster thread.
It's a bar, we're there already, it has a nice view and it serves booze...nuff said
And easy to watch the bikes...
Metcheck has been changing tack (and wind direction), but it looks decent now.
Part of the attraction of the Madeira and the Boat Cafe at Felpham, as well as the Waterfront, is that you can keep an eye on the bikes. With bike runs being targetted by thieves that's no small thing.

Coo I disappear for a day and the experts move in! The Waterfront is part of the ride, full stop. The staff are great and go to the trouble of being there, and I'll support that.
I'll also drink any beer that people buy and then decide they don't like the taste of...sounds as though a few of us are in for a cheap day out! (Besides, "it's not about the beer" ™ Stella Armstrong, although 'Wilf', my mate behind the bar at Waterfront said that they do get the guest beer in sometimes...hence a polite question to that effect).
It would be handy to remember the way to the station though...
