Errrr.....
I'd like to do this one as my first FNRTTC, as home is rideable from the finish, but I've got some questions/concerns.

* Just how good do those lights need to be?

* Don't you get, you know, tired?

* How do clever people get to the start cheaply (from Pompey in my case)?

* Do the offroad sections agree with 23c tyres?

* Longs or shorts?

I think this route has a fairly rural stretch, so brightish. On the other hand it's only dark for about 5 minutes (slight exaggeration). What lights have you got?
* Don't you get, you know, tired?
Some have a kip during the afternoon before. I don't. I've been known to catch a few zeds while waiting for p*nct*res to be repaired.

Cycle? More practically, can you get an advanced ticket? Check the national rail website. The vanilla fare for me from Three Bridges to Victoria is 9 quid or so. By booking on line early enough I can get it for 3.90 (I think).

* Do the offroad sections agree with 23c tyres?
Don't know that one.

* Longs or shorts?
I think shorts. Maybe a pair of Ron Hills in the rack pack.

My take:
1. Err on the side of brighter than you need. Hope Vision One is probably the most popular choice for FNRttC regulars. I use one for the sticks & use my Cateye EL320 for the city sections.
2. I did take an afternoon nap before my first one, but I've found I don't need to bother. If you think you might need it, might be an idea.
3. From Pompey to Waterloo, there are no advance fares. Single or nothing I'm afraid....I get the train from Hilsea, the 2319 arrival at Waterloo, works out nicely to get to HPC for 2340 (even as last time when the train was late in) . For the return to Pompey from Felpham, we seem to have a little peloton forming, you'd be welcome to tag along. It's only another 25 miles:smile:
4. Simon says it's OK for 23c tyres, so it will be. Well, we hope ;)
5. With any luck it'll be warm enough for shorts. If you have legwarmers you could always bring them just in case.

A good light is always advisable but if you can't get one in time, make friends with someone who has and stick with them.

You might find yourself yawning at times (I know I do :biggrin:) but as soon as you get your legs moving and the blood pumping you soon wake up.

Can't help with the transport from Pompey.

We did the flint path last year with 23c tyres and no one suffered to badly. But I don't think we're doing anything as bad as that this year. Make sure your tyres are up to full pressure.

Depends on the weather as to weather I'll wear shorts. Check back closer to the time.

lights - Hope Vision 1 is good, and I still use the Cateye EL530. There's also a Tesco torch, which costs a lot less, needs strapping to the bike, but has a 3W LED.

If this is a one-off for you and you're reluctant to spend £50 or more on a bike light then you might want to wait for the forecast - if the skies are going to be clear you can probably get away with a £20 Polaris job. Bear in mind that we are under streetlights almost all the way out to Leatherhead, and on broad open roads for most of the way out to Faygate, where we stop for refreshments. From Faygate we go in to Horsham, which is lit, and it will be light by the time we leave Horsham - so you really only need about an hour and a half on full beam. There are patches of overshadowed road just north of Henfold, and you'd have to take it easy there. Needless to say, if the night is going to be overcast then you do need a pukka light.

Tiredness - I can't advise you on because it takes people in different ways. And Stu is the expert on train fares. As for the off-road bit - you can walk it if you want. I manage on 23s, but I know at least one who will walk it.

I always advise people to be conservative on the clothes front. It can get chilly, and some people's bods lose their thermostat at night. Me, I tend to stay warm, but some of us really get chilled. Light layers are definitely the way to go, and maybe legwarmers. It's not a fast ride, so there's little chance of overheating.

spoke to Mark at the Cabin - he's looking forward to it. And I've been down to the Boat House, and they're looking forward to it. All we need is the cat in decent form, and we're there!

Can I be the lanterne rouge? What route are you taking to Pompey? I'd probably try to break off at some point and head to Fareham to get a direct train back to Winchester.

Archie - Lighting-wise, I'll be packing the 2000+ lumen set up, simply because I can. Enough light for all!:angry:

I'll be taking my usual route- along the front, through Aldwick, then Lower Bognor Road, Vinnetrow Road up to Chi, over the bridge to Quarry Lane, round to the station, Fishbourne, A259 as far as Havant. The more the merrier...

^ I'm tempted to tag along as far a Chi as I fancy riding home to the 'Sham via the Hartings and the hilariously named "Titty Hill".

Ah! The Lovely Fiona has been in touch - excellent. Do I win the prize for out-of-town recruitment? She's new to road bikes, but I predict the FNRttC will have her hooked. She's a whippetty fell-runner and bought one of these yesterday:

Top job. I haven't really ridden that area so some local knowledge is much appreciated.

Vay whippety I hope, else the combination of Sussex "roads"* and the lack of spokes in those wheels may be traumatic. I, being more rotund and elderly labrador-like these days, will be bringing 72 of DT's finest with me.

*tbh WSCC are doing a storming job of repairing the damage done to many of our B and C class roads. They have teams or sub contractors working every weekend and overnight all I'm told, to get as much done as possible before the budgets get slashed. A minor bonanza locally if you are a road contractor so I'm told but it will be all too brief.
