I'm a little bit shaken this morning by Simon's rainbow-italic-Verdana email assault. It was the red-to-purple transition that really hurt. I pleaded with him before about a low-key version for the font-sensitive, but he was having none of it. Anyway, I'm not ready to look it it again, but to respond to what I remember of its contents - happy with any waymarking, potholing, chivvying and eyeballing duties, so pencil me in for whatever. There are plenty of faster and more expert mechanics than me, so I was only planning to be minimally tooled-up - but will throw in a 26" tube and can bring more stuff if requested.

Good news from the cat! He is, I understand, Never Wrong About These Things.

+1 to the above, emailed Simon to say so as well.

Had some unfortunate news from the LBS this morning. Following the bike fit I had done for the Viner last year, I'd been shopping for some 172.5 cranks to replace the 170s that were fitted. Velocity were going to fit the new chainset as part of a service. However, it turns out that there's a manufacturing fault in the BB area (effectively the whole assembly was being held together with a screw) and the frame is not repairable. Aaaaaargh  Will therefore be on the Jetstream. Unless in the meantime I drop £2.5k on the nice new '09 Viner Pefecta that Velocity have in stock, that is....

 Sorry to hear that Stu. Mind you, better to find out now than when hurtling downhill at 3am. Down to them to replace it, surely?

Indeed so, it was going to fail at some point, no doubt....
As to the warranty situation, have emailed Viner UK. As I'm the second owner, the usual warranty provisions do not apply. Mike at Velocity (a Viner dealer themselves) certainly didn't think so. But it does indeed appear to be a manufacturing fault, so worth asking them all the same. New Magnifica frame is £1.3k. Yes, I could get a PX/Focus/etc fully built for considerably less, but I would want a bike that rides and handles like the Magnifica, which has suited me perfectly, so I'm certainly not going to rush into buying a replacement.

Travelling all the way down from the grim north I am unfortunately restricted on how much crap I can bring with me, I always like to have some nice clothes to change into for the train ride home (so as not to offend my fellow passengers) and maybe a couple of other nice things to make the journey more enjoyable. For this month I also have the items that I have been selling off to raise money for this ride so I will be fully laden. I can of course still bring enthusiasm and banter....:angry:

Sorry to hear about the Viner Stu, I know how much you like that bike. Hopefully you can get sorted without too much financial outlay.

Agreed, that's a real bummer, only ever happens to the nice folks.

Mikee, I'm not going to have much to put in the panniers so feel free to bring some bits for me to carry if you so wish.

If you bring a couple of door hinges and borrow Ian's superglue mikee, we can sort out Stu's sig line by turning the Viner into a folder. (How can someone ride a bike beginning with the letter V for goodness' sake?)
Could call it a Diviner then, I suppose.
I'll bring a hacksaw, although there will be loads of hack sores perhaps...

I can honestly see us not getting into Brighton before 10. And if it rains and there are mechanicals even later. I've changed my mind regarding my ride, gonna use the Langster, get drunk on a bench overlooking the Channel and catch the train. Falling asleep and waking up in Bedford instead of Luton.

Is that am or pm Lee.....

Waking up in Beds is cool Lee...

Sorry to hear of your bike Stu. Is it un-repairable because it's carbon fibre?
If so, and you don't have any luck with Viner, try these guys

Thanks Luke. I don't think CF is the issue, it's possible the damage was done because the BB was overtorqued when the bike was being built. If I got it right, I think the threading in the BB shell is shot- so whenever the BB was removed/replaced in future, the problem would have been found.

Hmm that could make my second 100km home via Chichester interesting. Still there is a decent bus shelter on the ring road there I can have a kip in.
