FNRttC Friday Night Ride to the Coast - Bognor Regis 12th August 2011

Looks like this FNRttC will coincide with the Perseid meteor shower, which will peak between 02:00 and 14:00 on the 13th. Unfortunately we'll be heading south, rather than towards the radiant in the north-east, and we'll have a full moon, but may still enjoy some spectacles in the night sky!

The Moon will however be quite a way from the radiant, and will be setting shortly after 3am, although the sky will be starting to lighten up by that time. ... and the predicted ZHR isn't terribly high this year either.

Of course, all these people with bright bicycle lights don't exactly help sky viewing conditions.

Perseids are breathtaking on a good night - but in my experience you need to be lying flat on your back to see them to full advantage. Otherwise you get terrible neck ache. Just sayin ...

I have only seen Elcids - over the Spanish moors - with everyone sporting a 'Friday' it truly will be a star-struck night.

The ZHR for sporadics is about 60, so waiting for a few minutes, you would probably stand a good chance of seeing a sporadic. With the Perseids having a predicted ZHR of 100 this year, looking towards perseus itself (and obviously the radiant), we should see almost two a minute on average, so kill most of the lights, and look in the direction for five minutes, and we really ought to be able to see several perseids (and possibly the odd sporadic).

Good grief yes, now to work out how to get slr and tripod into the saddlebag.... I can get half decent satellite and meteor trails here in crypal, the lack of light pollution out in the badlands would make for some great pictures.

There have been instances of people hearing sounds, associated with meteor trails, but these aren't believed to be directly associated with the passage of the meteor through the atmosphere, but may be related to the ionospheric trail left by the meteors passing through the upper atmosphere.

Having said that, no one really understands how they're generated, only that it seems likely that the sounds are real.


I hope that the water main issues south of Croydon currently, which are utterly buggering up the London-Brighton line today, are cleared up by the time the ride occurs, otherwise many of is will be stuffed getting home.
