Wot he said, apart from the 'vastly overblown' bit. It looked like an alp the first time I saw it looming in the distance, and that first ascent definitely was not a piece of cake (though I made the mistake of stopping for a drink), and had to walk for a bit as it was a false flat and just couldn't kick off again, even with a 22" bottom gear. Didn't make that same mistake again, next time I got up in one go. Even though I've been up there quite a few times now, I could never take the Beacon for granted.
That said, keep the pace steady, change down as and when (and if you can leave yourself a bailout gear or two) and you should be fine.

Or ride back...I think we are going to need a bigger train!
Very hot and dry. There will be a mandatory stop at the top of Reigate Hill for the application of sun cream ...What's the weather going to be like? I fancy joining my club mates on this but I've done too many wet Brighton rides.
Very cold and wet. There will be a mandatory stop at the foot of Reigate Hill, we take cover in the tunnel to add more waterproofs in a fruitless attempt to remain dry. At the Cabin the local brigade will be called to pump out the establishment following our visit. You will hear the phrase 'character building' too often for it to have any meaning.Very hot and dry. There will be a mandatory stop at the top of Reigate Hill for the application of sun cream ...
