FNRttC Friday Night Ride to the Coast - Brighton 3rd August

I'm still expecting to be with Team Bimble Slow on the way back, since the whole Olympic malarky, even if it is possibly avoidable, does give me an excuse to try this cycling back home stuff. At least for me, it's only to Croydon, so relatively easy. I must make sure I don't follow Susie et al too closely, and find myself in Streatham, having gone too far.

Hi All,

After thoroughly enjoying the FNRttC Southend edition, I decided to sign myself up for this ride, and I'm rather looking forward to it. Two quick questions if I may. Firstly, on Southend ride I carried a bag with a rather large D-lock inside which after a while was getting uncomfortable after a while, is there a way around this, like a cheap smal cable lock, as I can get everything of note in to my saddlebag and jersey?

Secondly, is there still plans for two ride back to London?

On point A: Small cable lock will be fine. There is plenty of room at our Brighton caf for bike parking and plenty of people will be keeping an eye on them in any case.
Point B: Pass, I'm going west.

I just take a lightweight Argos cable lock, wind it round the seat post, and hope for the best. There are a lot of other cyclists keeping their eyes on their bikes too. London, it ain't.

I just take a light cable lock on rides such as the FNRttC. When I'm in the cafes, I try to sit where I can see my bike. In Hull, where it wasn't possible, we had a rota of people standing guard over the bikes.

There do seem to be two rides back to London (I'm heading for Euston afterwards).

I'd recommend taking a decent lock to all four of the 'standard' destinations, including Brighton.

I'm tempted to sneak my roadie onto the Victoria train. Of course if I get ejected it might mean I'm late or rendezvousing in downtown Tooting or whatever. But I do need to lead a more exciting life ...

I'll have a mini-D lock in my bag, which I consider the minimum adequate lock for Red. It may not be London, but depending on how many of us there are at breakfast, you can end up locking up on the other side of the road, sometimes behind cars (especially as people start appearing).

I guess it depends on how paranoid you feel, and I'll often use two locks when locking my bike up at work, so a single mini-D seems like the lightweight solution to me.

Mini cafe lock for me. Usually locked to two or three other bikes, also with locks. And bike close by and always in view.

Am coming via Waterloo to avoid Southern rail. Is Westminster bridge/Victoria Street a good route or via Lambeth Palace Road, Lambeth bridge and Horseferry Road better?

Just had a thought, changing at Clapham Junc to get train to Victoria will mean southern trains, so will get off at Vauxhall and cycle up from there instead. That work for you?

I've done the Brighton ride a few times and have never once thought it worth bringing a lock.

I have a sturdy combination lock and will happily lock my bike to someone else's to improve both bikes' security.

it's just this. We sit around and about, and the bikes are stacked hither, thither and yon. Most of us look up from time to time to check the bikes, but, to be honest, I can't identify all of the bikes and all of the riders - and when somebody takes a bike from the stack I wouldn't necessarily know if he or she was the rightful owner.

The plan is to pick up the coffee bearing hatlers at Blackberry Wood Campsite, just south of Streat church. As long as it's not raining.

I may well attempt to pick up the ride there then. As long as it's not raining.
