easy for you to be glib, Mr 'not-so-smackerel-sized' Collins.Worry when he shouts "All gone!" rather than "All up!"

Seriously, it's not that bad. Assuming you've got a compact or a triple with a decent range cassette, it's just a question of pacing yourself and getting the gear changes right so you can grind/spin your way up without either panic or deciding you need a lower gear you've not got . I've usually reached the summit in 34x25 or x23.Im thoroughly looking forward to my first experience of a fnrttc. After yesterday im just trying to mentally block from my mind this Ditchling i was warned/teased about
.
I have discovered though that im a little bit of a prep freak.
I have inflated my spare tubes to ensure that they have no issues, inspected my tyres, checked my lights and ensured they are as expected, I have packed my puncture repair kit, valve extenders, first aid kit, emergency money, CO2 pump, mini pump, ten chain links and two quick links. mini tool and chain link tool, ductape, cable ties...... and im not sure if Im done yet.

Hmmm. Trickier. But our leader somehow manages it with 39x21, so there's hope for mere mortals...Nope Nope and errrrm kind of.
53/39 and 11/28. Which i found to my cost yesterday the 28 wasnt playing ball so i will deffinatly be sorting that before hand !

The bike has been stripped, cleaned, and lubed. You've forgotten spare spokes, a cassette tool, a chain whip and a tyre boot.....
I'm more of the change-down-as-and-when persuasion. What gear changes? The best advice I was given was to get into the lowest gear I'd got right at the start, otherwise the gradient catches you out. I hate Ditchling Beacon (but then I don't like hills in general), sorry!
