Claudine, does the route go through Cowbridge by any chance?

Cheapest and easiest train service I can find is £56 return via Southampton.

Not as currently planned, although it isn't set in stone - DZ is going to look over the proposed route, which at the moment passes about 4 miles from Cowbridge (to the East). I think it's quite unlikely that we'll go right through it though - that would be Plan D. You got pals there? It's a nice town in the daytime (with a cracking boozer) but nothing to get excited about at 1am and beyond...

I'm also seriously thinking about this, too early to be sure, but now Davy has confirmed , might just make it irresistible

If I do I may cut across and meet you in Wantage or Swindon, is that the way you're going?

"Davy" and "confirmed" are words that (unlike "Frank" and "ridiculous") do not belong in the same sentence...

You lot are nutcases, by the way!

Good tips from the expert!
I did think of bringing a piece of pipe lagging or something to help wedge my tyre into the track, but your solution sounds better

My bike wouldn't go in the outside space as the bars clashed with some bit of train...

You can of course not put your wheel in the wheelbender, but next to it, if the bike is tied on securely, and some bikes sit better with the back wheel in the rack. The other tip is to stick your head out of the window at stations to check no-one is nicking it! Actually I've become a lot more relaxed about this - the guard/manager/whatever-he's-called is usually nipping in and out of that door at stations, and at a lot of the stations on the line it is a platform dead-end. Nevertheless I think it's worth a check at Reading and Cardiff particularly.

Rich - I booked an open return from Lewes to Portsmouth (£19.95) then singles for Portsmouth to Cardiff and Cardiff Swansea to Portsmouth (£8 + £12 = £20.00).

Maybe I'll meet you on the train?

Sounds good TMN. I'll check it out - what time trains are you planning on getting?

Yes, I did keep a good look-out at Reading to make sure no-one was riding off with it!
Mine wouldn't go in back wheel first without bashing the rear mech.

Mick,

Excellent!

Wouldn't make any sense in you trekking up to Harefield. I'll post a suggested route soon (with hindsight I should have done it last night instead of spending a couple of hours arguing with Zoiders et al about Tesco, but didn't!), but likely to be Wallingford-Didcot-Wantage-Swindon-Malmesbury...

If I were you I would probably go Reading-Wallingford and join us there as that is just about the prettiest route there is through the Chilterns.

My daughter and bf will be staying there that night by sheer coincidence but I suspect they'll be too pissed by then to wave me through anyway!

Chip off the old block, eh?

Find out exactly where she's staying, in case it's out of town. I currently favour The Bonvilston Variation, which brings us as close to Cowbridge as we're likely to get. Who knows - DZ might take a fancy to The Llancarfan Dip, which would put us yet further away...

I've just booked a ticket on the 2141 from Reading to Cardiff, with bike space, arriving Cardiff Central at 2323...maybe cutting it a bit fine but it was only £15 and couldn't resist.

TC - let me know if this is ok - I've not booked a return yet as wasn't sure what would be happening the next day, I'm trusting to you to make sure I find my way back somehow!!!!

Dell - my details remain the same but if you need any dosh etc in advance can you let me know, otherwise I'll settle up with you on the night

Hooray! Great to have you on board, MacB!

I don't think DZ will check his emails til the weekend. If you're (still?) CTC there's no rush, if not he'll need the £12 cheque in his hands before 5 May.
South-Easterners will be heading back in dribs and drabs I think. I will be hanging around in a leisurely fashion all weekend, and hopefully having at least a beer or two after the ride, and possibly some more drinks later - you will of course be more than welcome to join in any further revelry, and if I feel up to it I might provide some lunch chez Claud. If you let me know your deadline for getting back I'll do my best to make sure you're on the necessary train!

Do you mean arriving 23:39? If so you will not be alone

If the train's on time you'll make it to the start pretty easily - I'll post some instructions here for getting there from the station. We'll need a Plan B just in case the train is late, which will probably consist of letting Adrian know the route out of town and making sure we've got each other's mobile numbers. The route I have in mind can be headed off at the pass without too much trouble.
