Assuming the ride up to the smoke goes as planned, my record's definitely getting broken.

^ Aw Gareth - a nice little drift into Windsor, along the Thames to Staines, down along round the A30 to Feltham and beyond...pick up Luke en route to HPC, then Des O in Chiswick... you'll be missing a nice pre-ride ride!

That was the plan, my thinking is that as 72 miles is going to be a long ride (for me) i thought i would see if i can survive the planned section first. If its all good and i can still stand at the end of the planned ride then i will have to sign up to the next ones and cycle in and pick people up en-route (its only going to be 25 miles extra afterall ).

^ Quite right too - I'm only teasing... (I tend to be a bit serious most of the time you see) - see you tomorrow! Don't be a stranger - there's enough of those around (although Frank's not on this one, neither Ed nor Davy... are they?) Theclaud is the really kooky one, and, if you see a ghost drifting towards you early dawn, don't worry - it'll be marinyork with his own particular take on 'glycogen debt' that needs repaying!

Rest your legs before the ride, Gareth, and then, if you feel sprightly (and sober) when you leave Felpham you could latch on to people heading west. Hummers and Stu will be going to Portsmouth, and I'm going to Wittering. You'll have the wind behind you, and stations at Chichester and Bosham to head for if you're starting to feel it. The route east toward Brighton is do-able, but a little on the complex side unless you're prepared to bomb down the A259. And the headwinds at Worthing will be just tamarisk-shredding.

Or Gareth if your feeling really good at the end I can lead you back up through guildford to the Great Park and let you meander your way home from there.

Thanks for all the offers, I have planned this one out a little bit as i have family (Grandparents) about 5 miles down the road (I know this is cheating ;)). Mum is always looking for an excuse to pop down and see them so this was a great opertunity to get a lift back  (and have a sleep mid morning).

I plan to do others and i dont have family at the end of any of the other rides, once i know what to expect im sure i will be game to cycle back with a group as well as cycling in. I will see how the 72 miles pass and get some more long distance under my belt and then start to enjoy the ride back in the sun.

So how does this one match up to Whitstable hills-wise? Am nursing a slight hangover and have no prospect of much extra sleep tonight or tomorrow during the day.... That said I did set a couple of PBs on Tuesday for the CryPalberg so maybe I am actually getting better at the lumpy stuff.

Similarly rolling- in absolute terms there's about 50% more elevation, but Bognor's no more difficult than Whitstable, really.

Feel free to follow me back up the Arun Valley as far as Horsham if you want to stretch your legs but aren't sure of the whole return journey in the company of speed-miceters. The advantage of 'my' route is it follows, more or less, the Chichester/Bognor/Portsmouth Harbour to London Victoria rail line meaning ample bail out points along the way when I get all tired and emotional...

I think it's easier than Whitstable, but others disagree.

I'd tend to agree with Simon, since there are a couple of steepish hills in the middle of the Whitstable ride, whereas I can't think of anything equivalent on the Bognor ride.

Neither route is really that hilly, compared to Ditchling on the default Brighton route.
