are there any more details about the trip and destination? from what i can see on a map, getting to harwich doesn't require any major water crossing. for trip back to the smoke i'd use a part of dunwich-london route that i rode couple of years ago (manningtree, colchester, tiptree, maldon, e hanningfield, w hanningfield, stock, billericay, ingrave, gt warley, romford etc.). if there is a better route i'd be glad to hear from experienced ones (not via dover - thanks!).

I've worked out a route back here to Dartford Crossing..but it is the Colchester, Maldon, Billericay route but turning south after Billericay rather the going on to Warley

I was just about to say that.

I'm assuming I'm the Martin rather than 'Teef? Really looking forward to this!!!

What a man believes may be ascertained, not from his creed, but from the assumptions on which he habitually acts.

George Bernard Shaw.

He also said that 'Youth is wasted on the young'. Not wasted on you then BigMart. Getting lost in the wilds of Manningtree is a qualifying stage for the 'Tour de Mouseketeers'... dosing up on polystyrene coffee and tricky foodstuff at a kebabbery outside Shenfield Station almost gets you into the exclusive Club. I might be riding back with you.

That will be a first!!!

Is getting lost a prerequisite of membership of the Mouseketeers then? If I'd known I wouldn't have sold the Garmin 605, that could get me lost on the way to my shed!!!

I seem to remember suggesting a trip to Stonehenge and onwards a couple of months ago...did we not come back at the same time, Titch?
Anyway, unless you have ridden back with the Great Man, 'Life of Brian' - you haven't really ridden back at all...

Garmins, and one's ability to blame them because they cost money, are no reason to not get lost.

we go via Mersea Island - hence the boat. Personally I find going through Colchester a bit of a nightmare - and the road to Tiptree and Maldon really unpleasant. Have a chat with Charon the boatman and ask him when he'll be available for the return trip.......

From Colchester, planning going south on B1026 through Tollshunt...I cam imagine it's a far better road then the Maldon/Tiptree Road

I have no imagination - I'll bimble back and turn right onto the A414 and ride until I get Ongar pangs. From they, a quick hello at the Tottingham Hotspurs shop on your behalf, Ian, and wend westwardly to the periphery...no rush, I have got all day. About 176 or so milos or so...as the Googlemap walks.

Yeah - right! I remember the last time we bashed through there...what a dump - Andy A got a puncture iirc. Where's your mate these days...the mad Columbian or whatever he was...didn't drink or eat anything, just rode like a dervish on his clunkermobile?

Actually, that ride up to Newport, around and then back down was a good day out...even though I arrived a bit late   However, I did make a pilgrimage to Much Hadham and encountered my first ever ford! One for the diary.

Turkish...Burak aka The Camel
Clunkermobile.? Blimey that was no clunker squire. That was a super lightweight hand built jobbie for when he did competitive MTB'ing in Turkey... got stolen.. he was very upset about that.

He's now working all the hours God sends working on one of those Pedicap thingies in the West End

Sorry Simon. I'm not going to be able to make this. I have to go to Leeds and back on Sunday to return one of the little 'uns to Uni, leaving at 4.00am, so an overnighter the day before can only end up with me falling asleep at the wheel. Disappointing as I haven't done the speedy ride yet. Have fun all.
