Grr....at this moment I was expecting to be atop the Beacon, making my way to the Madeira, or having breakfast there. Not laid up at home. But that was before I kissed the dirt rather hard on Reigate Hill....
First part of the night went swimmingly. Train was slightly early into Waterloo, smooth & rapid progress to HPC, and the first part of the journey was great. Notwithstanding the additional weight of the Carradice SQR bag & contents on the back, the Viner was handling the roads superbly, confirming it was worth all the ££££££ to put back together. Then came Reigate Hill. I remember discussing downhill speeds with Lee. I remember our leader's reinforcing safety talk about taking the descent carefully- oh how apt in my case that was to prove. I remember the first part of the descent. What I don't remember, and it's probably for the best, is how I ended up lying right side down in the road, feeling somewhat 'ouchy'. Ian was right behind me and thinks I clipped a catseye. However it happened, I've now got umpteen cuts, bruises and abrasions on my right hand (knuckle, dressing would prevent shifting even if I felt up to riding- one working hand at the mo), arm- elbow also dressed, bit of abrasion on the forearm- right thigh (not dressed, wishing they had atm), temple (helmet seems to have saved me from further noggin damage), and shin.
That bothers me less than the damage to the bike- as in my last couple of prangs, I seem to have done a perfect job of protecting the frame. However, my nice shiny new Athena rear derailleur is now scratched up (plus the cable end got snagged), as is my lovely XT SPD pedal. Two weeks. Two weeks in perfect nick, and then this....AAAARGH! And I missed baklava. And Ditchling. And breakfast. And the Big Surprise. That in particular.
Hope everyone had a lovely time despite that little incident, and I'll see you next month (it is only cuts and bruises, honest!).

Not often I get accused of being inanimate

Just had a look at the Garmin data- hit the ground at 19 mph or so I think. The large period of inactivity after was a clue....! Right hand was cut open quite badly, right thigh hurts like a bugger as well. Hopefully they'll both be OK in a day or two. Will be in work Monday, perhaps, but almost certainly not on the bike....

just made it home

Great ride as always, weather was fine and dry although a little cold at 4am, Stu came a cropper - hope all is well with you and your bike and it was our great leaders birthday which we celebrated atop of the the Beacon.

Great ride again Simon and thank you to all the waymarkers who help make the ride what it is.

80 miles for me. Now to bed

Bike is fine, apart from annoying scratches I've mentioned. I'll live.....

Stu - the cake was a great success atop Ditchling. Coupled with Greg's bartending, everything went according to plan. What Plan? We are still soaking up the ' sunshine' as I write...

I'm glad, though I didn't get any

Sunshine? The kind that comes out a bottle/keg I presume?

Look after yourself Stu. I'm glad it looked it hasn't turned out as bad as it first looked. Take it easy, see you on the next FNRttC. (there aren't any tricky descents into Whitstable as far as I remember........)

Well that's my first FNRttC and SMrbH out of the way. 144 miles more or less. Thanks to all the people who work so hard on organising these and doing the waymarking and TECing duties.

DItchling beacon wasn't as bad as I'd feared, I had two spare gears when I got to the top.

Congrats also to my two partners in crime who passed their first 100 mile trip on this one. Roll on Kent next week and Whitstable in August.

Special mentions to Ian for convincing me that staying up all night and riding to the seaside and back could be a fun idea. Andy A for showing back onto my homeward track from the DT and Topcat for deciding that this would attract his sponsorship rather than the Kent ride next week. Very special thanks goes to Welling Way for just being there, my last descent into home.

Now off to the garden for beer.....and possibly sleep

Missed you Stu, whilst on sommelier duty Adrian told me of your mishap.

Get well soon my friend and let your bike wear its scars with pride.
