right, having cogitated and deliberated I'm afraid I'll be excusing myself from this ride. I had always had the intention of doing the IoW on the Sunday and this will just be too much. I think doing both would result in me not obtaining maximum enjoyment from the IoW one.

Have a good run folks and see you for the one after

Perfectly understandable Al, hopefully see you on the Randonnee.

I am hoping to join the ride, having registered yesterday. I am planning to ride back to Tilbury to get the ferry, then ride the remaining 7 or 8 miles home to Rochester.

deckertim, you must join for a Whitstable; it's sublime and we break our fast in your home town at Andy's Cafe.

Peeps, how flat is this Sarfend one compared with say Brighton or Whitstable? I may be tempted to outrage the fixie purists and come on a singlespeed! Anyone got a real live route profile for instance? The power of data; such a wonderful thing esp. when a dash of opinion is added.

Very flat. Couple of hills on the way to Bataland and it undulates from Basildon to Bread and Cheese hill but the undulations are small. Bread and Cheese hill is achievable on fixed I would say. Worse case, you push it a little way at this point.

It's in my diary already. I cycled down to Whitstable and back on Good Friday, probably using parts of the same route. It was very enjoyable, but absolutely poured down for the last half of the journey back.

I did my first ever FNRttC on a singlespeed to Southend a couple of years back. It was easy enough, although NSTN may not agree with that, since it was her first FNRttC as well!

This is the route from last October's Southend ride, which as far as I recall was fairly typical. Bikely will let you plot the entire elevation profile, which gives you some idea of what the route is like.

I've been assured it's downhill all the way, with a 20mph tailwind guaranteed.

Normally I ride my Thorn Audax on these rides. In honour of the Martletts I rode my Bike Friday and soon after Clapham, I was told by a Martlettette that I, along with the others (Tall, penny, fixers), 'was a bit looney'.

Delighting in my escalation up the cycling pecking order, I will ride my Single Speed (72") Specialized Tricross in celebration to Southend.

I just make it up Richmond Park's Broomfield (aka Bastard) Hill on this gearing, so am hopeful for Bread & Cheese hill.

Oh, please tell me someone's doing it on a Penny, then I might not be the slowest thing out there ...

No doubt you had the 'small wheels are slow' myth to contend with as well..I did. Funnily enough, I passed quite a few others climbing Ditchling :becool:
