I think the next time one of us heads over to west coast US, they ought to act in an ambassadorial capacity for the FNRTTC to the "Ridazz". Looks like they don't have waymarkers or TECs. The whole thing looks like a scene from a David Lynch movie in fact. Anyone planning to head over there soon with the credentials to represent the more British qualities of night riding ... ?

They seem to have solved the beer quality issue by going to establishments selling the bottled variety.
One has to admire the effort they've put into the face painting too.
Do you think they're members of the US CTC though ?

Going to have to pull out I'm afraid

I am from Oregon (home of modern microbreweries) and am planning a visit home next summer. I make no claims as to my ambassadorial qualifications.

For what's worth from here though - "west coast US" is a very big place, with infinite possibilities for night-time routes that have no turns and thus no need for waymarkers. (I'd miss the TECs though.)

If "Ridazz" is in Portland, then I could check them out. If in LA... er, no. That's 2 long days' drive away and not worth the brainache.

EDIT: State Bicycle Co is in Tempe, Arizona. Way off my radar.

I've cycled to the top of a mountain in Tempe Arizona. In the afternoon. It was hot.

I just hope, young Rebecca, that you stay away from Fremont, a suburb of Portland that has not only a huge bust of Lenin, but (gasp) cyclists who wear no clothes! Cling to your Fridays shirt!

It's lovely and clear outside tonight, the moon is bright and visible, and there's no obvious cloud about (not that you could see it for most of the sky, but none near the moon).

It's quite a moderate temperature as well, I was just wearing a long sleeved jersey with a thin merino top over it, and that was perfectly comfortable even when I left work. In fact, it was a bit warm by the time I got home.

Currently LHR is reporting 7°C and LGW 9°C, which is rather mild for this time of year. Hopefully tomorrow will be similar, in which case it's going to be a good ride.

Yeap, it's a gorgeous moonlit night in the Midlands too, and quite mild - I didn't even bother with the merino base layer.

But, ahem, shouldn't you be getting an early night for tomorrow today?

I'm now doubtful for tonight.

Don't expect me, but if I do turn up, rejoice and be exceedingly glad.

OK you two - I read this before I left for work this morning and ditched the hardcore rain gear in a fit of optimism, inspired by your reassuring words. And now I get emails from The Lycra Missile himself, with dark words about "heavy showers". What the devil are you playing at?

Hmm, some of the forecasts have a bit of rain, but it looks like literally a shower, and that's the sort of thing which can disappear as fast as it appears. It wasn't on the forecast last time I looked yesterday.

On the other hand, I always carry a Goretex waterproof on the FNRttCs! I don't think I'll be ditching Red in favour of the Kaffenback and mudguards, which I would if I thought rain was a serious issue.

It'll be dry and mild

  • The forecast is for rain.
  • By the sea, at 3am in November, it is ALWAYS bloody freezing.
Which one of those two sentences are you having trouble with?

I read these at 4.30 this morning (foolishly, I went to bed early so I'd get plenty of sleep ). By then , the forecast was saying drizzle in London at 6am and rain in Whitstable at 9am - forgot to check Chatham. So don't get too worried yet. It will change a few more time before tonight.

And last weekend it was supposed to rain in London all day Saturday: nary a drop fell anywhere I was.

Have you looked at the London Weather Map on the BBC Weather page? That tells a much worse story than the forecast itself. A very heavy concentration centred on HPC at midnight!

XCWeather is much more hopeful. It looks like the forecasters are going to be tested even more than the riders tonight.

Forecasts, doppler radar?

I laugh in the face of technology.

It will rain and its all due to the curse.....the curse of the FSA megaexo

What?

Well the mega exo on my Sutra has expired, so I'll be on my old cannondale M800. The Sutra has guards (well a guard) the M800 does not (nor a rack so at least Simon will be happy  ).

Thus having tempted the fates, it will now lash it down  :rain:
