The Lynnfield, just round the corner from Highland Park. The decor (baronial) would no doubt fall foul of the taste police, but the rooms are large, the bathrooms fantastic and the restaurant outstanding. And the whisky menu is rather fine.

Oof, Thursday night before this is the leaving do for most of my colleagues (we're being closed down, I'm on cleanup crew finishing at the end of September). So I'll apologize now if I'm a bit wobbly after a big night at st John.

For the avoidance of doubt, that's "fine" as in:

• 8 pages of various Highland Park special editions
• 5 pages of Scapa special editions
• Something rather nice called "Old Man of Hoy"

...all before they even bother looking off-island. And an owner who will happily give away the odd taster of something which he's only just got hold of, not yet even in the list!
