is the ride down to Canterbury nice and easy? There's a cracking little beer shop there that I quite fancy popping into....
I've never done it but I was just thinking about having a look at the Crab and Winkle Way on the Sunday (I'm stopping with friends in Whitstable on Saturday). I'm told it's quite hilly, which surprises me because I believe much of it follows a disused railway line. As for track surfaces, I'd imagine it's Sustrans standard.

Edit: Just looked at cyclestreets for a rough route: http://www.cyclestreets.net/journey/2261134/ . No hillier than a ride up to Crystal Palace from the Thames.

lovely, thanks guys.

Wonder how much beer I can fit in my saddlebag....

The Crab and Winkle Way is less hilly than the FNRttC itself. I did it a few years back, when the Whitstable trains weren't running, so we had to leave from Canterbury, and I was using my single-speed Pompino. The hilly bit are places like where it goes over a main road (slope down, over the bridge, and slope back up), and I imagine that either the train didn't go that way, or it's bridge/viaduct/whatever has disappeared. The surface wasn't quite tarmac, but mostly reasonably solid as I recall, to Sustrans standard, as mentioned up-thread (which isn't much of a recommendation, but means it's tolerable for non-tarmac). It's a nice very pleasant ride, quite scenic, and bereft of motor vehicles most of the way.

I'm glad to hear we're all being catered for in Strood, coffee, tea and cake is all we need (and a loo!), we're an easily satisfied bunch.

It's going to be a bit of a novel route in places, what with starting at Waterloo Station, and going via a new 3amses stop in Strood. Will we still be going past the submarine?

Claud and Adrian will be happy to know I've replaced the Arkel Randonneur rack and TailRider trunk bag with a Bagman and Carradice Barley, so they won't be called upon to haul my kit around this month. I'll be getting some sandals and growing a beard shortly. ^_^

Has anyone got a route for getting back into London?
Back the way you came over the marshes to Faversham and then straight up the (old) A2. It's very direct. I shall be riding back, but haven't decided whether to go the direct way or a slightly gentler route involving much re-tracing of steps.

Not a lot...sorry! This Friday, as on a lot of recent rides, I'll be coming straight from work, so all the gear's got to go somewhere...

Booooooooooooooo..... ;)

am now considering carting a small (empty) rucksack around just so I can get a few beers in it - the stock list is *that* good.

It's either that or fit the rack and put a crate on it - Portland hipster style.

£8.50 at Waterloo but you have to be there by 2300
I've not been doing that lately cos of the cost, but as I'm in the mood to travel light for Whitstable I might splash out. I'll leave it at Victoria though, for ease of collection on the way back. Having said that, I do have a nerdy new Bagaboo accoutrement which it would be a shame not to show off...
