I've just had a look at tickets and it's going to cost me £19.10 whenever to get back to Rotherham (no advance available, only 'Anytime'

). I think I may have a go at riding back and bail out if I need to.

Dellers, I have just happened upon this and possibly would be up for a exploratory ride. When?

As a boy I spent 2/3 summers holidays riding in the Wolds so I would be v pleased to see that territory again but probably not at all familiar after an aeon.

Unfortunately I've got my ticket already and there is no facility to go back for a cycle reservation alone. I think that I shall go to Kings X tomorrow to see if a person can sort it out for me.
Adrian, in my experience, I've always found it far more reliable to converse with a real person to book these things. Good luck.
I'm going to try Kings Cross today.

If I book a train back from Hull at 10am that's going to give me plenty of time, right? We'll be there by then. Is anyone else heading back to York on that train, because they only take two bikes?

Sam

If it's a northern rail one, they say they only take 2 bikes but are extraordinarily laid back about it all. I once got a northern service back from Leeds where the guard apologised to me that I was having to stand in the doorway with bike for a couple of stops, since there were 4 bikes (in a 2 wheelbender space) on before me....

Sorry to ask again...how relaxed are Hull trains with their bike policy? We're trying to buy another 10:30 from Hull back to KingX and it's all booked up. Many thanks!

Alberto - I think you take a chance. Sorry, because that's not the answer you want, but it's the best answer. It depends on the attitude of the guard.

I can't, sensibly, do the recce because of childcare stuff and you really wouldn't want me along for it anyway! But if you want some cake/flapjack for the journey, do shout.

Yeah, get with the crazy extreme all-night cycling! Wondering whether you'll catch the train is part of the adrenaline thrill. If you don't get the train but want to get back in time, I'm prepared to run a ride back to York that's somewhat brisker than Crinkly/Arch's version. If you want to be really brisk, we could always run a paceline for the 38 miles up the A1079

If you want to ride but are worried about missing a train, you could always buy yourself ~25 more minutes by riding to Doncaster instead.

The A1079 is one of the worst 'top ten' roads for accidents in the UK, avoid if you can :hello:

... and on a Saturday is busy as hell too.

I did Hull to York and back via the A1079 a couple of years ago and I wouldn't do it again. I survived (which is how I feel about the experience) but lots of traffic and HGVs and not a great deal of room for us cyclists; a tight squeeze and lots of elbow shaving!!
