..........Class is meaningless.

If only that were so. Unfortunately, as this thread shows quite well, lots of people cling desperately to the outdated and trivial concept.

7.

Although there’s some very well educated guys with low paid jobs. Like my mate Steve who worked in a library for 10 years on about £12k a year, although he should have been on 4x more with his high IQ.

OK my parents were born into working class family. They have the same values as their parents. Dad went to university mum didn't but got an OU degree later on.

I was raised by them in a middle class household, grammar school educated and university educated. I have the same values as my parents, who have the values of their parents. So how does that work for the theory of values fixed as a kid and defines class? I was raised middle class by parents raised working class but stepped up to middle class through hard work. There is no real change in values across three generations and their change from working class to middle class.

Class is too complex to say it's fixed at childhood or to limit it to education or money earned. I very much doubt we know our own class by current sociological thinking. Certainly anyone who says their working class, like there's more honesty in being that class, is likely to be in a different class. Just as anyone who thinks childhood fixed your class is also likely to be in a different class of their circumstances are different to their parent's.

BTW that BBC test had me in a lower class than my partner. However if you knew its both you'd probably say I'm in a higher class. I've had a better / grammar school education which makes me well rounded from science to arts, very excellent general knowledge etc. It makes me sound more middle class and she's from the north east so sounds working class. I have 2 degrees, she has 3 and is a professional researcher in academia. So in the bbc test she scores very well for the types of people she knows socially. Professors, doctors and academics. I know socially process workers, barely above minimum wage types who are so working class. I'm not "one if them, I speak proper and know proper crazy stuff!". My spoken vocabulary is much better than I put in my posts here. At work and home it sometimes surprises ppl when a long word pops out totally naturally to me. So middle class!

However my partner has the theory that I'm a class chameleon. By that she means I'm working or middle class depending on my audience. I do a good northern accent for working class places, but go very posh when middle class is needed. I don't realise I'm doing it.

So basically I don't trust or believe class systems based on wealth, childhood, occupation, education, etc.

Oh dear.

Tragic.

I haven't really the inclination to pick apart the rest of your posts, but there's inflammatory garbage aplenty there you'd do well to comb over and wonder if you ought to have strewn on this thread, like an urban fox climbed in your head looking for a snack and tossed your thoughts all over our drive.

But, let's just give this one a forensic look-over, huh?

(Of course, the thread's designed to fit bespoke for the North-South Divide Posse. Anyone expressing outrage that the North is being taken in vain will be summarily chewed up by the Posse. They'll be along in a minute.)

You "do a good northern accent". Well, that's great. How insulting. Nice to know you can slip effortlessly into one of our working men's clubs up here, order a pint of black and tan, and relax without getting your head kicked off for being posh. Well done you. Thanks for confirming that the middle class have us pinned to our cultural stereotypes so tightly, like little collected moths in glass-fronted drawers, for their titillation.

You "go very posh when middle class is needed"! Oh my. When is it needed? You mean, when you're pretending to be someone you don't think you are? Tell us more. On second thoughts, don't bother. I can only imagine you'll tell us about your time eating little fried doves with a napkin on your head, or when you got the business card of a really good orthodontist while on a cruise. FFS

"I don't realise I'm doing it" Of course you realise you're doing it. You've just told us in detail all about it. You're rather proud of your shapeshifting. Maybe it's time for you to come down and decide who you are, and have the courage to be that person, however many degrees you have and whatsoever the degree of "posher" you are than your partner.

Upthread someone complained we hadn't got angry enough. Bloody hell. I'm spitting feathers here, and I usually resist the urge to respond to "taunt" threads like this. I've just reread your Post 60! Are you real?

You've already called me a snob if I identify with working class. You're happy to pepper your idle posting with insults, down and back to those you think you're trampling over. And then dismiss it all by saying none of it really matters.

Your posts define the very essence of petty bourgeoisie: worrying but unsurprising that we're still talking like this.

This is one of the best posts for a long time. That is all.
