im a little tea pot
I know 105 rear derailliers will accept 8/9/10 speed systems, but will the fronts be ok on an 8 speed compact?

Im thinking of upgrading to 10 speed bit by bit but my 2300 front deraillier is getting really bad

You will be able to make it work, but even if you set it up carefully you will still get more chain rub on the extreme cogs, especially if you are sticking with 8 speed chain. The cage is narrower.

Are you sure your front mech is "bad"? Ime it is very rare for Shimano mechs to fail, unless it was hit of course. The vast majority of front mech issues are due to suboptimal set up, or cabling issues. This shows how.

I have just changed my 2300 for a 105 due to wear. It's taken quite a bit of adjusting but she's running fine with a slight bit of rubbing in 24th gear (mines a triple). I am already running a 105 at the rear, and have had to change the cables as well.

i might take the cables out and re-grease/replace them and see if that solves the issue. i get a small amount of chain rub at present in the extreme cross chain (which i try and limit) and i just cant seem to get the front mech adjusted properly.

screw it, may just get the LBS to replace the cables, BB and re tape the bars in the near future and see if that solves it
