How many bearings should there be?

Right side had 8, left had 10?

No I didn't lose any, and they didn't get mixed up.

Is it a matter of filling up the race until its full?

It's better to have 1 less than 1 too many. 10 or 11 would be normal.

And what is the best Grease / Lubricant to use on bearings to get them to perform better

They recommend synthetic grease or teflon grease on one of the tutorials I just read.

Mine have 9. Felt hubs

Usually 9 x 1/4" bearings in the back and just about any grease will do, even vaseline.

Well I ordered new bearing yesterday around 4pm, arrived this morning, fitted and working. Lovely.
