I bought a Moon 300 lumins light from my LBS last year. I had trouble with it from day one, I wont have another!!

Think seriously about a German made light, a seemingly less powerful light from there in terms of number of lumens turns out to be actually brighter than many higher priced lights from elsewhere. They do this by having strict regulations for beam direction so almost all of the light goes where you want it and doesn't blind other road users.
Rose bikes are excellent, plus the exchange rate is very favourable at the moment as everything is priced in euros. Have a look at the Trelock range, very impressive.

How bright are these really ?? When the roads are wet and its dark, what do they compare with ?

On the German standard scale, I find 30 lux is usually OK for dark wet country roads at 20mph and that one is over twice that... but I did grow up with Never Readies and often idled along barely able to see the edge line, so I may have low standards

There's no indication that it's road-legal or what beam shape it has. Lumens are meaningless - it's where they're being aimed that matters. http://road.cc/content/review/141303-niterider-lumina-400-front-light criticises its battery life and the beam shot comparison makes me think it's bascially an O-shaped torch-like beam which is likely to dazzle oncoming road users, which is both anti-social and unlawful.

road.cc's beamshot tool's aim of the B+M Ixxon seems a bit dodgy (it seems a bit low and to the left verge) but gives an idea of what a better A-shaped beam is: lights up the road without flooding the faces of oncomers.

That's the thing we are fed lumens is everything which to a degree is all we can judge on. Will check out YouTube for some vids of this light to see how it compares.

Can't tell you about the Trelock, but (despite my severe doubts initially) I find the Ixon iq Premium (weird naming system BuM use) pretty much as usable onroad as the Strada. Similar battery life. Less good on the offroad section of my commute, and the Exposure build quality is way better. But also rather pricier.

I recently put a punt in on a Kickstarter for Ding lights based in Australia. - Was only about £42 for the light as an early backer.

They had a commuting light, with cut off, but also a downward light which gave a pool of light under the bike. The light has now been modified a bit more but should ship in October. It's not mad bright (400 lumen) but has loads of side visibility. The new design has optics that can be seen from the side and the downward light !!

Flux elite by specialized ?? Spendy at 150 quid!!! Cannae help think hit under a 100 and this would sell a load!

I couldn't spend that on a light that i use for the bike but also for dog walking and going down the pub(badly lit road). I tend to break or lights so it wouldn't be worth it.

I don't have a front light for my hybrid (I've just broken my rack light too but I have found another online that's similar!. I don't know much about lights!
It's used on roads occasionally, but mainly shared paths. Most have lighting but there are sections which are quite dark.
What sort of light do I need?
