update, working much better, ever so slight rubbing on the big chainring which i think i can sort easily, took the whole thing off degreased it put it back as per instruction made sure everything was tight, turns out 2 chainring bolts were loose and the left crank arm bolt was also. thing is now i'm getting a bit obsessive with every little noise!!! ta to all for your help

And remember not to look for the sources of the noises while riding the bike. Really effective way to crash!
