I have a Dura Ace 9000 with 11/28 on the rear and 52/38 on the front, I also have spare front rings 50/34. What I want to know is can I mix then up and have a 52/34 set up ??
The 50/34 may not be the same BCD as the 52/38, you will need to check. On top of that, there is no way I would ever advise running 52/34, the drop between the rings will be huge.
You'll have to check the shimano tech doc but iirc when I last looked a 16t was the maxium drop (fwiw I bought a 36t for back up to my 38t if I go to mountainous terrain (I also run a 52/38 11-28)), I think too big a drop for the front derailleur to handle will lead to deraillment. That asside it'd probably be to big a jump for a cyclists legs anyway.
... if you need a 34/28 bottom gear then I really can't see you needing a 52/11 top gear! (That is 38 mph at 100 rpm cadence and if you can manage that then you should be able to climb in 38/28.)

In case you think I am being funny with you, zootnanook ... I have a 26/28 bottom gear on my Basso, but only a 52/14 top gear, and it is very rare that I miss higher gears. I can get up to about 35 mph in top gear, and if I am going faster, I just get aero and freewheel. (The only time I go at more than 35 mph is downhill!)
