Can I ask a question?
All these weed killing chemicals advertised all over. Don’t you just dig the root out with a hoe and put the weed in a bag? It’s free and doesn’t leave a brown dead weed? Or am I missing something??

I have a Fiskar weed puller, spent all day pulling dandelions out of the lawn and filled out green bin 2/3rds full.

Two weeks later you couldn't bloody tell!.

You're right of course.

But....

What if the weed comes up between your block paviours, slabs or tarmac?

Boiling water works a treat. (Especially dandelion) With one client’s block driveway, I just nick off the weed heads with my strimmer when I do the lawn every two weeks. And eventually the weeds give up the fight. No leaves, no photosynthesis.

For moss on driveways, iron sulphate mixed into a watering can is an organically approved method.

Boiling water- true. But I can't see me using that method in work. The distance I have to walk it would be Luke warm. I very accurately spot spray.
A place I used to work we had a flame thrower. The gravel would explode on the path if you held it in one place too long! For dandelions you'd have to toast them a bit.

I have six chilli seedlings growing on my windowsill, I have no idea what the exact variety are ,all I was told are they are red hot. I also have four Cobaea scandens (cup and saucer vine) grown from seed in the bay window which are now 18 inches high, I am going to pinch them out and reduce the feed as its at least another six weeks before I can harden them off. All available windowsill space is taken up with my Dahlia tubers in pots which have just been potted up, varieties are Karma Choc, Cameo and my favourite Bishop of Auckland which is an improved take on Bishop of Landaff. I have barely moistened the compost in the pots as I do not want them rotting off and also I do not want to much early growth as they cannot go out until mid may weather permitting.

Grow them in pots or confine Mr T to a run. If you leave him to wander freely he'll turtley destroy the garden!

Grow cabbagesthen he won’t bother the tulips

Then I’ll have a problem with the tortoise. I don’t want to be in the shoot with the kids.

Brassicas are one of the worst thing to feed tortoises as they block the absorption of calcium. Granted, they sure love to munch on some iceberg lettuce or the like, but they are not healthy. Not enough people know that.

Hares are the other thing tortoises shouldn’t eat.

He is lovely, deserves a wee mini “adventure” garden all to himself

He is great fun. 11 years old and goes by the name Dombotoya (Happy Rock in Shona) We have a CITES certificate and everything. (Spur thighed tortoise)

I have modified the veg garden for him, but the chickens have started hassling him, so I need another plan. He does like one of my greenhouses, but the chickens also use it as a dusting spa resort. Pets huh!

My sister had a tortoise called Henry.
The cat used to hitch a lift (on his back) when he was going walkabout, they were great pals.
Used to cuddle up to each other too, tortoise snuggled up to the cat and cats paw wrapped round him.
Amazing creatures
