If the map is on a micro SD card it will fit into the device itself, in the appropriate slot.
At least it does on my 605

Yep. The map card fits in the slot under the rubber cover (next to the charging point).

There's a setting on the Garmin to select which map to use (once you've installed the card you can select between the pre-installed maps that come with the 800 or the new ones you've just installed on the card)

Not on mine - this is an sd card gb discoverer from Garmin - I see the slot you are saying but this ad card definitely doesn't fit in there .

Thanks for yr prompt replies .

see the thumbnail slot in the sd card?; cleverly inserted into its bigger brother is a micro sd card. Pull on the thumbnail slot and the micro sd will emerge.

Now a Q from me.

Having bought a bigger volume micro sd card so I could get both the 1:50000 discoverer maps which came with the unit and some OSM maps I have downloaded, I find that the unit fails to recognise both. Must be summat to do with the format, but what?

Fatblokish - wish you had replied about 7 hours ago !! I found that little gem out by phoning Evans cycles .

For a complete idiot like me ( & apparently about 10 other people a week according to Evans) I fail to believe this very important bit of information isnt mentioned anywhere .

Thanks for yr reply in any case

Sorry I can't help with yr prob. But I really am a complete techno phobe !!!

i think if they are both gmapsupp.img then it might only read one on device - if you have one on card and one on device it reads and mingles both if they are both ticked in settings - well thats what happens on 705

There is copy protection on the garmin supplied sd card

Both maps are on the new card, not the garmin supplied one.
I will investigate how to get one of the maps off the card and onto the GPS itself.
