Hello CycleChatters. I come once again for advice.

I'm feeling mightily fed up as I'm currently in the deapths of my second nasty virally, chesty cold this year (having had a nasty one in Feb).

Nasty cold aside, I do feel that I'm generally not as energetic as I ought to be. I wake up every morning feeling knackered, and would love to spend my evenings and weekends doing interesting hobbies, but even if not knackered, find it difficult to summon up much energy.

I don't drink, don't smoke BUT my diet is not very good. I dont eat enough fruit and veg. Lots of naughty bad carbs. Crisps and pizza are my favorite things (not neceserrily at the same time). I'm about two stone overweight.

What are your top tips for giving me an energy boost and warding off these nasty colds?

Eat fruit, eat veggies and get lots of sleep and listen to your body.

I eat carbs now (Slimming World eating) and I drink an absolute ton. 3 litres a day minimum. I also have a fitbit which kind of makes me want to do my steps so as not to disappoint the little black thing on my wrist (I know how bonkers that sounds out loud).

I have been nowhere near my bike all week, despite the lovely weather. New job has put my system all to hell and I have no energy myself. I am going to kick myself up the bum in a min and take the CX out as it's wet and muddy out.

To ward off colds, I would recommend Echinacia. I have it in fluid form. I stick a couple of drops into some water and drink it every day for 2 weeks, then have 2 weeks off, then every day for 2 weeks and so on and so forth. I've had one filthy cold in 4 years. When I am feeling under the weather (when I had that cold) I had garlic & rosemary capsules to boost my immune system. Lots of dark green leafed veggies too - spinach is awesome, as is brocolli.

I'm on the echinecea now, trying to reduce the course of this one. The last one in February knocked me for six, had to have two weeks off work. I've soldiered through this week, but feel like death warmed up at the minute!
I have realised that I don't drink enough during the day. When I was a ward nurse I used to keep a 1l bottle with peppermint tea in it that I would top up throughout the day. Now I'm in an office environment it's evil coffee and lots of biscuits.
I sort of know what I need to do to improve my diet, but can't quite summon up the energy to do it.

Start with some tasty fruit smoothies for a boost. Cut down on the naughty carbs slowly. Eg ditch the pizza but keep the crisps for a treat, and their vitamin c, if you eat proper potato crisps.
Hope you feel better soon.

People over egg (no pun) the influence of diet on mood, in my opinion.

Look to the other factors in your life, and address the stress and sleep patterns as well as your diet.

Tie in eating healthy with something you enjoy. This is more than just a reward process.

For example record your favourite tv show and you are ONLY allowed to watch it when eating a salad. No salad, no tv program.

It is important they are done at the same time and not as a reward.

Have you asked your GP? I suspect (s)he is in a much better position to offer constructive advice than the forum. You probably don't have anything much to worry about but a basic blood test or two including thyroid function (which can present very insidiously) would set your mind at rest and if it needs treating, then hooray!

I have times when I feel extremely tired and get breathless easily on exercising, and then it's always back to the iron tablets. I try to eat well but when you are feeling tired it's much easier to grab something that is calorie laden!

This year I think there has been a nasty cough circulating that seemed to hang around for ages both for me and friends.

I consider myself fit, but I would get tired carrying 14 bags of sugar around with me all day.

Put the wrong fuel in a car it will run very rough or not at all, I am clueless as to why we expect to put poor fuel in our bodies and expect them to perform well.

Sorry it sounds harsh and I hope your bugs clear off soon.

Been up and down Steep Hill in Lincoln today and could not help people watching, the extra weight was showing itself on a lot of bodies.

The echinacia thing takes a few cycles to kick in. Sadly it's not going to do much starting it mid-lurgy but keep on with it and it will go a ways to kicking the next one into touch before it gets you

+1 on a quick visit to the doc.
